Cathy Conley pursues goals with determination
I By KATE WOLFORD Staff Writer Cathy Conley of Milford pursues her goals with determination. The computer programmer/analyst has worked for Syracuse Rubber Products for one year. She wanted to work for a small company and her present job brought her to the area. “I felt I was going to be more comfortable where things would be a little more personalized, with a little more teamwork, ’ ’ she says. C A small-town girl raised in Hicksville, Ohio, Cathy graduated from high school with honors. She began taking classes in hospitality management, only to find, “It was not the challenge I needed.” TrofOel Putting her well-developed math and science skills to work, Cathy, who had had no computer training in high school, decided to take on the challenge of earning an associate in applied science degree in computer programing. She attained the degree with honors from Ivy Tech in Fort Wayne and paid for her schooling herself. •> Her life as a single working woman in a small town like Milford has its ups and downs. “I can’t say I don’t miss the larger city (Fort Wayne), in some respects,” she concedes. But, “For day to day living, I’m pretty comfortable. It’s like the town I grew up in.” Cathy has been keeping busy these days; improving her lifestyle by changing her eating and exercise habits. The result has been a

weight loss of 116 pounds to date. Her strict daily regimen includes a calorie intake of 1,200, six miles of walking and two 30-40 minute exercise sessions. She says she’s dieting, “I’ve changed my lifestyle.” She’s changing on her own, but she’s receiving a lot of support from friends, and a doctor. Her co-workers, at first reluctant to mention Cathy’s weight loss, have offered a lot of encouragement. A doctor is aware of Cathy’s weight-loss program and that’s important to Cathy. “It’s piece of mind for me really,” she says. “I’m pushing my body pretty hard. ’ ’ Cathy’s head cheerleader is Cathy. She rewards herself when she reaches certain goals. For example, when she lost 100 pounds, Cathy bought herself a diamond ring.“l have more rocks on my fingers than most married ladies do,” she says with a laugh. Cathy vows to take the ring off if she ever gains 100 pounds back on. Despite her determination to succeed, Cathy admits the health changes she’s made haven’t always been easy. “It’s been a real tough summer,” she states. She began in June. Cathy has also found that while she can see her weight loss, she sometimes has trouble accepting that the body that is emerging is her own. “My brain is about 40 pounds behind,” she says. When she’s not focusing on her weight loss program, Cathy might be found sewing. In the past, she’s made most of her clothes, but these days, her sizes are changing so fast she’s buying her clothes. She also enjoys crocheting. She’s also an ace cake-decorator, but she doesn’t do much of that these days. “I don’t have the space and I don’t want the temptation,” Cathy says. Someday, Cathy would like to marry and have a family, but, “Right now,” she says, “I’m my project.”
