When Indiana voters go to the poles to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 8, most will be focusing on the candidate choices they have to make. In addition to these, there are three propositions oh which voters will be asked to vote. Proposition 1 reads, “Shall Section 8 of Article 15 of the Constitution of the State of Indiana be amended by removing the language that prohibits lotteries.”
Several area pastors were asked recently to give an opinion on the possibility of lotteries in In-

St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Syracuse will be the site of a meeting on Sunday, Nov. 13, to inform senior citizens of up-to-date information on catastrophic protection and other new Medicare benefits. Priscilla Rhode, volunteer director of Samaritans-On-Standby, (SOS) said the public is cordially invited to attend the meeting, which will begin at at 3 p.m. She said the new information will be discussed by Ed McClain, senior citizen advocate from Indianapolis. This informational meeting is part of the prime role of SOS, which has its office in St. Andrew’s Church. In addition to being an information source for senior citizen concerns such as insurance, taxes, health, etc., the agency performs other aids for area senior citizens. Volunteers drive people to and from the Syracuse nutrition site, drive others to hospitals for treatments and perform safety checks every weekday to be sure seniors who have signed up are well and being cared for. Wilma Cox, who is a volunteer caller on the safety check program, pointed out that, as with most worthwhile volunteer agencies, SOS will welcome more volunteer help.

diana if this language is changed. While the points made were varied, the consensus of this small test poll was a resounding no vote to lotteries. Ben Whirledge, pastor of United Methodist Church in Milford, stated, “I’m very much opposed to lotteries. Our United Methodist heritage back to John Wesley is that gambling and lotteries are not responsible ways for governments to raise money. Lotteries create many social problems as poor persons are encouraged to ‘throw away money’ which they should use for their families.”

Medicare has been expanded to include catastrophic health insurance to better protect its 32,000,000 elderly and disabled beneficiaries from “catastrophic” hospital, doctor and prescription drug bills. The changes were mandated by the Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act of 1988. They will be effective January 11,1989. - • The new law limits the amount a Medicare beneficiary must pay for hospital care, physician services, medical supplies and outpatient drugs covered by Medicare. It increases homehealth, skilled nursing facility and hospital coverage and adds breast-cancer screening and respite care benefits. The new and improved benefits will be made available to senior citizens automatically if they are Medicare beneficiaries or when they become eligible for the program. They are not required to do anything to receive the coverage. Those who are enrolled in Part A only and want to enroll in Part B to take advantage of all the benefits will be given a chance to (io so during the general enrollment period from Jan. 1 through March 31 each year. Frank Barcus, president of the SOS board of directors, joins the director in urging all senior citizens in the Syracuse-Wawasee area to attend to learn more about Medicare benefits;

North Webster, said, “Many people don’t realize that when they vote to change the wording they are voting to open the door to all types of gambling. Some think, it will create jobs in Indiana. I don’t think this is true. Even the printing of the lottery tickets would be done in other states.” “I think it will surely cost much and will take money away from

“Young people need some convincing, logical reasons why they should wait till marriage before having sex.” This is the position of a group of concerned people who are working with the Josh McDowell “Why wait?” Michiana campaign. “Why wait” is a national campaign dedicated to encourage parents, individuals, churches, ministers and other organizations to teach young people how to resist sexual pressure and present positive reasons for waiting to have sex within the loving commitment of marriage. Ed Moore, Gil Nichols, Charles Miller and Rob Staley, area individuals, traveled to the national headquarters in Dallas, Texas, to determine if this community could be a part of the campaign. They believe that the best place to advance this program is with local churches and their youth groups.
Hayride enjoyed by Christian Church youth
There were 27 junior-senior high youth from Milford Christian Church who were taken on a hayride on October 30. They were all warned to dress warm but quickly found out they didn’t dress warm enough. Regardless of the temperature, everyone had fun. The ride went from the Jon Custer home in Leesburg to Steve Replogle’s home in Milford. They

The statistics among church attending youth is not that different from non-churched youth. The study, which was Conducted in eight Evangelical denominations, revealed that by age 18, 43 percent had experienced sexual intercourse, 36 percent were not able to agree that sexual intercourse was unacceptable before marriage. Some 68 percent of the churched youth said that they attended at least one R-rated film and 10 percent reported having seen an X-rated film in the last six months. McDowell stated that the in-, cidents of adolescents in Christian homes struggling with sexual pressure has dramatically increased in the last few years — so much that he believes the cause of Christ hangs in the balance because of the callousing effects sexual promiscuity has on young Christians.
