Minton named NLC coach-of-the-year as highlights continue to mount

I By MITCHELL STINSON Staff Writer There have been a lot of highlights for Jerry Minton in his 16 years as cross country coach at Wawasee High School. His most recent highlight occurred in Dunlap over the weekend when his Warriors boys team upset Plymouth and won the Northern Lakes Conference meet. The victory gave the Warriors a share of the division title as the Warriors and Rockies both finished with 15 points for the season. After the meet Minton was named the NLC boys cross counin in-

augural season for the award. Producing winners and getting recognition from his peers is nothing new for coach Minton. He received Indiana coach-of-the-year honors for his girls’ team in 1983. He produced Northern Lakes Conference boys’ champions in 1981 and 1982 and his girls notched two consecutive seventh place finishes at state competition in those same years. In addition, the 48-year-old Minton was nominated for boys track coach-of-the-year in 1973, ‘75 and ‘76. The numbers just keep coming. This year’s Wawasee boys’ cross, country team may just be his best yet, however. The 17thrankprt Warriors finished 11-2 on

the season and Minton thinks they can suipass last year’s fifthplace semi-state performance and advance to state competition. “We should have gone last year,” he said. “We just didn’t have a real good day (at the semistate). This year we’re going to have a good day at semi-state.” The cross country program wasn’t always this good. When Minton took over in 1972 the boys’ team was coming off a 1-15 season. Minton guided the team to a 14-5 record in his first effort as coach and the program was never to be looked at as a joke again. “Right now it’s a highly respected sport and it has one of the highest won-loss records of any sport at Wawasee,” Minton said. The team has been particularly strong in the 1980 s where it has churned out 10-plus victory seasons like clockwork. Minton said it wasn’t easy to get quality athletes interested in the pro-

Lady swimmers splash past Plymouth, 87-85

IBy SCOTT DAVIDSON Staff Writer “I was happy not only with the victory, but I was also happy that the girls on the team showed a lot of pride and spirit during the meet,” remarked Wawasee Girls’ Swim Coach Tim Caldwell about the Lady Warriors’ hardearned, 87-85, win at Plymouth last night (Tuesday). Wawasee, now 8-3-1 on the season, received first place performances from Sherry Payne (50 yd. freestyle), Sirena Bartow (100 yd. freestyle), Moni Lange (500 yd. freestyle), Krista Guimond (100 yd. breaststroke) and the 400 yd. freestyle relay team. Caldwell said that the meet was “nip-and-tuck” the entire way and that the largest lead for either team was a six point margin for Plymouth. He added that the meet was decided on the final race of the night (400 yd. freestyle relay), when Wawasee was able to capture a first and third place. Second place finishes for Wawasee were recorded by Lori Boles (200 yd. freestyle and 100

gram at first. “We used to not get anybody,” he said. “The first year I coached cross country we had to run our manager in the sectional.” Minton said one of the keys to getting a good turnout for the team was to convince students how enjoyable cross country running can be. ‘Running is a natural thing,” he said. “It can be a lot of fun. You just have to sell them on it.” Although this year’s girls’ team finished with a respectable 6-6 record the program, which began on 1982, has reached higher plateaus in years past. Through the years, Wawasee’s lady runners have won two sectionals, two NLC titles and have qualified for appearances at state competitions three times. “It’s been a successful girls program too,” Minton said. Coach Minton is closing in on 250 career coaching victories in dual meets. At the moment, he

has 248 wins including his stint as a coach at Larwill in the Whitko School system. Number 250 will have to wait until next year, however, because dual play is over for the season. The Warriors will begin sectional play at East Noble on Saturday, Other sports that Minton has coached at Wawasee, besides cross country and track, include football and baseball. In recent history, though, he has been sticking to the running sports. Minton was no slouch in high school sports himself. He was selected to the Huntington County High School Hall of Fame for his efforts in track, basketball and baseball from 1954 to 1958. When he headed off to Manchester College he hanged up his cleats and played baseball for four years, from 1958 to 1962. Minton has been at Wawasee High School since its inception in 1968 and he teaches courses there.

very close meet where things just didn’t fall our way,” Caldwell stated. He added that the limited flexibility that the team has, because of the low number of swimmers, hurts the team in close meets. “We have to go with a straight forward line-up and that makes us vulnerable to teams with larger numbers because we’re just not able to make adjustments,” concluded Caldwell. Capturing second place finishes for Wawasee last Thursday were: Guimond (200 yd. individual medley), Bartow (50and 100 yd. freestyle and 400 yd. freestyle relay), Firestone (onemeter diving), Boles (100 yd. butterfly and 400 yd. freestyle relay) and Lange and Payne (both members of the 400 yd. freestyle relay team). Warriors rebounded on Saturday, Oct. 8, with a second place finish in the seven team Mishawaka In- / vitational. Wawasee recorded 75 points to finish behind Northern Indiana Conference (NIC) power Penn, who ran off with 156 points for first. Third place at Mishawaka was captured by South Bend Clay, who was followed by Mishawaka, New Prairie, South Bend Adams and South Bend Washington in the overall ’team standings. “We swam pretty well at Mishawaka, even though we only had 11 swimmers at the meet,” Caldwell commented, adding that the other members of the team had previous commitments that kept them from participating.
