Eat smart when eating fast
By ARMINA SCHMUCKER I Clinical Dietitian Kosciusko Community Hospital For the millions of Americans who regularly patronize fast food restaurants, the recent U.S. Public Health Service’s monumental report on nutrition and health was anything but good news. Fat, specifically saturated fat and sodium — both found in abundance in most fast food offerings — drew heavy fire in the report which recommended that most Americans should reduce these items in their daily diet. Knowing that a majority of Americans will still patronize fast food establishments — at least occasionally, dietitians at ARA healthcare food service operations have compiled the following suggestions for making nutritionally wise choices. Basic Facts How do you know which fast foods are high in calories, fat and sodium? And how do you decide where to eat? Calorie And Fat Cutters Here are some helpful hints to remember when eating out: — A fast food breakfast tends to be higher in fat, calories and cholesterol than other meals. To reduce your caloric and fat intake, choose cereal with lowfat milk, fruit or juice, plain toast, English muffin, fruit, muffin or bagel. Plain pancakes are much lower in fat and cholesterol than are fast food breakfast sandwiches. Just remember not to add butter and to go lightly on the maple syrup. — Virtually all fast food breakfast sandwiches are high in fat. If you do order one of the sandwiches that includes meat, the best choice is Canadian bacon, the leanest of all sandwich meats. Sausage sandwiches are the highest in fat and calories. — Choose broiled, baked or grilled chicken or fish when possible. If fried is the only choice on the menu, remove the breading and skin. — Eating deep-fried chicken or fish with batter or breading of-

fers no reduced-calorie or reduced-fat advantage over red meat. In fact, a plain roast beef sandwich has half the fat of a fried breast of chicken'or fried fish sandwich. — The baked potato starts out as a low-fat food. However, when you add cheese, bacon and the works, the calories double and the fat values skyrocket. A better bet is to add a small amount of margarine, then add vegetables from the salad bar, such as chopped green onion and perhaps a tablespoon of shredded cheese. Fast food meals can be either laden with calories, fat and salt or in calories and healthy. The next time you eat in a fast food restaurant, remember, ypii can eat wisely and healthy ifyou make the right choices.
