Learning and fun at Elderhostel 'BB
Iblglen long Staff Writer Epworth Forest Conference Center, on Webster Lake near North Webster, continues to be a great place for people of all ages to enjoy a time of learning, fun and the beauty of the Kosciusko County lakes area. The fall Elderhostel was attended by 40 people, age 60 or over, from 10 states across the United States during the week of Oct. 2-7. The smiles on*tfieir faces and the exhuberance with which they were taking pictures during photography class on Thursday, Oct. 6, told the story — they were loving the week! Dave Marty, director of Epworth Forest Conference Center, stated, “This (Elderhostel) is one of the most fun things we do each year, both in the spring and fall. Basically its because the people involved are so eager to learn and energetic. We don’t have much “class-cutting.” He added that the attendees were from widely different ares, California east to New York and Wisconsin south to Florida. Milford UM singspiration is planned The United Methodist Church of Milford announced it will hold its second community-wide singspiration at the church on Catherine Street on the evening of Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. ' Member Marie Stephenson said those who attended the singspiration last spring will remember what an inspirational service it was. She said the singspiration committee and Pastor Ben Whirledge join the congregation in inviting everyone to “bring a friend and come worship with song.” Special music will be provided by the combined children and adult choirs, the New Covenant Quartet and the Melloaires. Stephenson said those who have a favorite hymn may want to look it up in the hymnal when they arrive and give the page number so it may be included in tlie service. She said baby sitters will be provided so parents will be free to join in praising the Lord in song.

One of the courses the seniors attended each day was “You Oughta Be In Pictures!: The Art of Photography.” Julie Dußoise, owner of Sunrise Photography Studio, North Webster, was the instructor for this course and appeared to be having as much fun as the students on their outdoor photo jaunts. She is one of only three women in Indiana to have earned the designation of Certified Professional Photographer. The course included basic camera handling, special equipment, composition, lighting, developing, and a professional studio tour. A class on understanding our weather called “And Tomorrow’s Forecast” was presented by Paul Sell, who has worked in the weather bureau at Baer Field in Fort Wayne since 1977. Before that, he worked at weather bureaus in Alaska and at Detroit Metro Airport. From killer tornadoes to the beauty of a gentle spring rain, the group examined what causes changes in weather, how it is forecast and safety precautions to take in severe weather. They also took a tour of an airport weather station? In tune with the all the political campaign activity this fall, Dr. Roland T. Nelson led an interesting course, “Winners and Losers: Presidents We’ve Had and Might Have Had.” Included was a rousing mock political debate in which all of the class participated. Dr. Nelson is well-versed in many areas and has been a teacher at various Elderhostels, including Epworth Forest in 1987. Having earned his PhD from the University of Chicago, he worked for 22 years as a member of the Department of History and Political Science at Indiana Central University, now the University of Indianapolis. Hosts for the week were Dean and Minnette Hartle, who have been a part of the Epworth Forest community and staff for many years after moving from Huntington. Dr. Bruce Johnston, who with his wife, Marion, attended the week for seniors, stated, “It’s an enjoyable program. This course (on photography) has been very helpful. The political course was timely and a lot of fun, especially the miniature debate. Paul Sell did a great job of making the sub-
ject of weather interesting and entertaining.” Their home is Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Fred and Doris Ludwig, Saratoga, NY, were also getting a lot of mileage out of their cameras in the photography class. Fred concurred with Dr. Johnston and stated, “They’ve had an interesting program here.
More Bibles going to Soviet Union
The American Bible Society (ABS) has reported that churches in the Soviet Union have asked the United Bible Societies, the partnership for global Bible work which ABS helps fund, to supply them with another 100,000 Bibles printed in Russian, as well as 50,000 Bible storybooks. In a phone call from Moscow to the ÜBS offices in Stuttgart, West Germany,. Rev. Alexai Bichkov, general secretary of the AllUnion Council of Evangelical Christians (AUCECB) in the USSR, said the Soviet authorities granted the import permit on Sept. 1. Bible Society officials predict that the likely shipment time for the Bibles and storybooks will be January, 1989. This new request brings to 369,000 the number of copies of the Scriptures which have either been shipped by the United Bible Societies since January, 1988, or which will shortly be on their way to the Soviet Union. Included in this number are 1,000 copies in Russian Braille of Paul’s letters in the New Testament, from Galatians through Philemon. The most recent shipment of Scriptures by ÜBS left Hamburg on Sept. 2, bound for the Ukraine. These 32,000 Ukrainian Bibles are the first installment of a gift of 100,000 Bibles from ÜBS. Between February and April, 1988, ÜBS shipped 98,000 Russian Bibles, as well as 10,000 in German and 2,000 in Ukrainian, all of them destined for AUCECB in Moscow. ÜBS confirms that most of the Bibles have been distributed to congregations throughout the Soviet Union. Further shipments of Russian and German Bibles took place to Moscow and to Riga, Latvia, in July. Shipments of Bibles and New Testaments in Russian, Ukrainian, Latvian and Georgian
