Obituaries
Harley L. Casper Harley L. Casper, 72, 708 61st St. NW, Bradenton, Fla., and North Webster, died early Sunday, Oct. 2, 1988, in his Florida home. He was born on March 9,1916, to Leon and Cecil (Borror) Casper. On June 6,1937, he married Dona Mattern in South Bend. She survives. He was retired from Sears, Roebuck and Company, South Bend, where he lived until moving to Florida. Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Curt (Sally) Miller, Bradenton, Fla. ; one son, LeonL. Casper, Mishawaka; four grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Reed and Beverly Casper, both of Dewart Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Viewing was held Monday evening in Bradenton. Friends may call today, Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Guisinger Colonial Chapel, corner of Chippewa and Michigan (US 31) Streets, South Bend, where services will be held Thursday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. David Stoops David William Stoops, 49, 26084 U.S. 6, Nappanee, a former Syracuse Lake resident, died Friday night, Sept. 30,1988, in an accident near his home. The Elkhart County coroner said that Stoops was mowing his lawn along U.S. 6 east of Nappanee when his riding mower was hit by a pick-up truck. Stoops resided for several years on East Shore Drive, Syracuse, and served as president of the Syracuse Lake Property Owners Association in the early 19705. He was also active in Lakes Study Fund, an organization sponsored by the Syracuse and Wawasee Lake Property Owners Associations to maintain water quality in the two lakes. Stoops was a sales manager and real estate broker with Lee Dallas & Associates of Nappanee.

He was born June 2, 1939, in North Girard, Pa., living most of his lifetime in Nappanee. Survivors include his mother, Ruth Stoops, Nappanee; a sister, Judy Dibble, Contoocook, N.H.; and two brothers, Donald J. Stoops and Ward R. Stoops, both of Peterborough, N.H. He was a member of the Elkhart County Board of Realtors, the Indiana National Association of Realtors and Lambda Chi Alpha. He previously was the advertising and promotion manager for Coppes Kitchens and was affiliated with the Mutschler Brothers, O’Brien Paints and Wickes Home. He was a 1961 graduate of Ball State University. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 4, in the Thompson-Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, with burial in the Union Center Cemetery, northeastofNappanee. / George Casto George L. Casto, 79, r 1 Milford, died of an apparent heart attack in the Kosciusko Community Hospital emergency room at 3:09 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30,1988. He was bom May 13, 1909, in Mount Jackson, Pa., and married Julia Sabo June 24, 1934, in Detroit, she survives. He moved to Milford from Detroit 12 years ago. He was a retired meat cutter and supervisor for Allied Supermarkets of Detroit. He retired in 1971 and was a member of the Milford Christian Church. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. John (Virginia) Reno, Detroit; one son, Dick Casto, Milford; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Emily Hazen, Salem, Ohio. He was preceded in death by three brothers. Services were held Monday morning, Oct. 3, in the Milford Christian Church with youth minister Brian Wilcox officiating. Burial was in Milford Cemetery. BAUMGARTNER RECOVERS FROM PNEUMONIA Milford resident Arthur (“Ted”) Baumgartner was admitted to Goshen Hospital on Friday, Sept. 30., after being diagnosed as having pneumonia. Baumgartner was released from the hospital on Monday and is doing much better at this time. Thelma Clapp Thelma I. Clapp, 82, formerly of Dewart Lake, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, in Columbia City Community Care Center. She was born May 16, 1906, in Wayne County to Charles and Verda Berry Elliott. On Aug. 23, 1928, she married Frank Clapp, who died in 1968. She lived in Hartford City and was a 1924 graduate of Hartford City High School. She was later employed in South Whitley after graduating from International Business College, Fort Wayne. She and her husband had resided in Chicago until 1960, when they moved to Indianapolis. They were summer residents of Dewart Lake, where she continued to live after his death. Survivors include one daughter, Susan Lamp, Rock Island, Ill.; two grandchildren; and one brother, Lewis A. Whitaker, Hartford City. Blue, 85, 356 Heritage Blvd., Vera Beach, Fla., died Sept. 27, 1988, in Indian River Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born May 18, 1903, in Claypool, and graduated from Indiana University and moved to Chicago, 111., where he was associated with Illinois Bell Telephone as a Commercial Manager for 38 years. Following retirement, he moved to Syracuse. In 1980 he moved to Vero Beach, Fla. He was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte in 1969. In 1971 he married Lenore H. Evans, she survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Barbara Davies, New Canaan, Conn., and Nancy Zimmerman, Naperville, 111., and two stepdaughters, Julie Whittock, Achorage, Alaska, and Jane Hetzel, Malvern, Ark.; one stepson, Marley Evans, St. Clair,

She was born July 9, 1921, in Syracuse, to Noble and Fay Burson Ringler. In 1941, she married Herbert Dickinson, who died in 1960. She moved to Kendallville in 1942. She was employed as a dietician at McCray Memorial Hospital, Kendallville, and was a member of the Eagles Lodge Auxiliary, Kendallville. Haifley, 88, 71570 CR 35, Syracuse, died at 4:07 a.m., Monday, Oct. 3, 1988, in Goshen General Hosoital. He was bom June 2, 1900, in Rhoades, lowa, to John and Elsie Lowery Haifley. In 1922, he married Mamie East, who died in 1936. In 1938, he married Viola Harper, who survives. Haifley moved to Syracuse in 1980, coming from Lincoln, Neb. He was an office manager at Polk County (Iowa) Highway Department and was a member of Grace Bible Church, Syracuse. Survivors include his wife, Viola Haifley; one daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Maxine) Ellis, Des Moines, Iowa; three sons, Rev. Heart disease classes
The prevention and management of heart disease will be featured in a series of classes which began Monday, Sept. 26, and will continue Wednesday, Sept. 28, and Thursday, Sept. 29, in Goshen Hospital. Each class begins at 7 p.m. in the hospital’s Pepple Auditorium. The first session was by Dottie Kauffman, RN, cardiac rehabilitation coordinator, on information on the heart and its function, the process of heart disease and healing of the heart
No injuries in 3 accidents
Three accidents were investigated by Syracuse Police between last Thursday, Sept. 29, and Tuesday, Oct. 4, with no injuries being reported in any of the incidents. Carol L. Burke, 24, Wakarusa, was attempting to back a 1984 Chevrolet truck on Seventh Street, at the Chicago Street intersection, when the truck struck a 1986 Oldsmobile Firenza driven by Rita M. Thornburg, 31, Syracuse. Burke was unable to Break-in last night at Syracuse doctor's off ice Syracuse Police are investigating a break-in at the offices of Syracuse Family Practice, Inc., 303 South Huntington Street. The break-in occurred sometime last evening or early this morning (Wednesday). No further information is available at press time.
