town on Monday — giving 48 of them a coat of “bright red” in just half a day. The fire hydrants had not been painted since a special project had been undertaken in 1976 dur-
ing the observance of the country’s bicentennial celebration. While making note of the freshly-painted fire hydrants, we want to be sure to remind everyone of the annual Milford Fire Department Chicken Barbecue this Sunday, Oct. 2. Fire Chief Jim Amsden says the firemen will be cooking 1,200 chicken halves on Sunday. The serving of “carry-outs only” will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the fire station with proceeds going toward new equipment for the fire department. -oHOW QUICKLY we forget! Last week we noted in this col•umn Doll was moving her beauty shop into the former Pat Speicher Insurance building. Not true. She is moving it into Dr. Floyd Rheinheimer’s former medical office. The Speicher Insurance building which at one time housed the office of Dr. Hugh Snyder, DDS, was purchased by Dr. Frank Wadas, DDS, and then rented to Speicher by Dr. Wadas. Dr. Wadas, as almost everyone knows, built a new office on SR 15 several years ago. The Wadas building was damaged by the fire which destroyed the Evans Family store building last January. It was torn down. The land where it stood is now a vacant lot.
After our error last week, a staff member called Dr. Wadas to see if his land was part of the package being sold. The answer “no.” It is not, at this time, even for sale. And, while Max Evans was unavailable for confirmation, word about town is that his uncle, Stan Custer, is the person who has purchased the old Evans property. The Custers, who reside at Camelot Lake, are currently vacationing in Alaska. THE INTERIOR of the Milford EMS building recently received a fresh coat of paint. Carel Hawkins, Waubee Lake, volunteered his time last week to paint the ceiling and walls of the building. Hawkins started on the project Wednesday morning and finished on Saturday with the sidewalls. —6— A PUBLIC notice appears elsewhere in this issue listing tax rates to be charged in the various townships in 1989. Milford residents will pay $8.4575 per SIOO of taxable property while Van Buren Township residents will pay $6.4005. Rates in other Wawasee Community School Corporation taxing units are as follows: Jefferson east, $6.1075 (compared to $7.0906 in Jefferson west); Tip-
pecanoe, $6.3071; Turkey Creek, $6.4176; North Webster, $9.9898; and Syracuse, $9.0016. Our neighbors to the south in Plain Township will pay $6,612 while those persons living in Leesburg will pay $7.8782. WHO SHOULD attend the EMS banquet on October 22? Anyone who has ever been transported or helped by the Milford EMTs. Anyone .who has had a loved one saved from the clutches of death because the EMS was there when needed.
