Lady swimmers win fifth

I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Staff Writer “We just went in and got the job done like we’ve been doing for the last few meets,” stated Wawasee Girls’ Swim Coach Tim Caldwell after the Lady Warriors 113-59 victory at Bremen last night (Tuesday). The win was the swimmers’ fifth in a row and improved their season mark to 5-1. Contributing first place efforts for the Warriors were: Jennifer Titus (100 yd. breaststroke and 200 yd. medley relay), Krista Guimond (50 yd. free, 100 yd. free and 200 medley relay), Lori Boles (100 yd. butterfly and 200 yd. medley relay), Sherry Payne (500 yd. free and 200 yd. medley relay), Sirena Bartow (200 yd. I.M. and 400 yd. free relay), Julie Gunn (one-meter diving), Moni Lange (200 yd. free) and Tonya Perzanowski, Chris Ridings and Shawna Miller (all members of the 400 yd. free relay team). Caldwell commented that Gunn did an excellent job in last night’s win and that Miller also had a very good meet. The 200 yd. medley relay team of Titus, Guimond, Boles and Payne established a new Bremen pool record with their time of 2:06.2. Last night’s victory followed a Monday evening (Sept. 19) 117-34 win over Tippecanoe Valley at Wawasee Pool. The Lady Warriors captured firsts in nine out of the 11 events during the meet. Winning for Wawasee were Guimond (200 yd. medley relay, 200 I.M. and 100 yd. breaststroke), Payne (50 yd. free, 100 yd. free and 400 yd. frfee relay), Boles (200. yd. medley relay and 500 yd. free), Titus and Miller (200 yd. medley relay), Gunn (one-meter diving), Perzanowski (100 yd. butterfly), and Lange, Bartow and Ridings (all members of the 400 yd. free relay team). The Lady Warriors current win streak also includes a 116-38 victory that was recorded at Goshen last Thursday, Sept. 15. In that meet, Wawasee received first place performances from Guimond (200 yd. medley relay and 100 yd. backstroke), Payne (200 yd. medley relay and 100 yd. breaststroke), Bartow (50 yd. free and 500 yd. free), Titus (200 yd. medley relay and 400 yd. free relay), Gunn (200 yd. medley relay), Perzanowski (200 yd. free, 100 yd. butterfly and 400 yd. free relay), Dawn Firestone (one-meter diving) and Miller

and Boles (both members of the 400 yd. free relay team). Caldwell commented that the team hasn’t had any bad races in the last few meets and that they’ve just been going out and getting the job done. He added that Goshen and Tippecanoe Valley were so low on team numbers that it was hard to get the girls motivated to perform at a very high level. Poor play translates into five game skid

A lack of team play has contributed to a five game losing skid for the Wawasee spikers, according to Coach Jill Yoder, who hopes to get the Warriors back on the winning side of a 3-11 record when they travel to Concord Thursday. Wawasee fell at Whitko, 15-17, 10- after leading 6-1 in the first game of a tough loss last night (Tuesday). “We played well for awhile, but then just got behind and fell apart. We’ve been real inconsistent,” the coach said. Kriss Eisenhower led the Warriors with nine service points and six spikes, with four kills, while Kristin Robbins contributed 12 spikes with three kills. The spikers also dropped an 11- 4-15 decision to Goshen last Thursday, Sept. 15. Diane Karst led Wawasee with 14 spikes, while Wendy Mills had eight digs. Goshen’s Rebecca Barnhill provided a one-woman wrecking crew, gathering 10 serves, 11 passes, three blocks, 12 hits, and two kills for the 5-3 Redskins. “We’re looking for serving consistency, that’s been our main weakness,” Coach Yoder said 'after the match, still searching for a winning formula. The coach expressed disappointment with the “individual play” that has taken the place of team play over the past few weeks. “We need to work together as a team if we’re going to win,” she deadpanned. The junior varsity team also fell to Whitko, 6-15, 13-15 last night. Lauri Stiver led the younger Warriors with seven service points and 14 points overall, while Nicole Neff had 15 sets and

mers, but little depth, according to Caldwell. After tomorrow’s meet, the Lady Warriors travel to North Wood next Tuesday, Sept. 27, for a “key meet”, according to Caldwell. North Wood, who defeated Warsaw by six points last night in a key conference showdown, will be very tough, said Caldwell. “A conference championship could hinge on our meet against North Wood, and you’d better believe that our girls will be keyed up for that one,” * Caldwell emphasized.

Nicky Enyeart contributed three spikes, with one kill. Goshen was on the losing end of 15-6, 15-7 scores against the JV Warriors last Thursday, Sept. 15. The junior varsity record now stanch at 4-7.

Plymouth wins

(By MITCHELL STINSON Staff Writer It was a battle of cross country titans at the Wawasee High School course yesterday. In a matchup between unbeatens, one “o’’ had to go and it was the Plymouth Rockies that kept its boy’s conference record unblemished with a 20-35 victory over the Wawasee Warriors. Both teams came into the meet with 4-0 conference records, but the nail-biting match-up never materialized as the Plymouth

Minton said yesterday’s performance may have been d low to accompany Saturday’s high. “If we would have taken our Saturday times we would have won,” he said.

Coach’s Corner

Timpe coaches 'mental-physical'

(By MITCHELL STINSON Staff Writer Mark Timpe has to coach the mental aspect as well as the physical in his position as the Wawasee Warriors’ girls’ golf coach. Timpe said control of emotions is a vital aspect of the game. “If a girl has a bad hole she has to forget it and go to the next hole,” he said. This is Timpe’s third year as Wawasee’s golf coach. He has coached girls’ softball for two years as well. He says golf is a bit different from other competitive sports. “I think golf is more a finesse game,” he offered. “It doesn’t matter how small you are.” Timpe, 35, played high school golf himself as a student at Concord High School. He was the school’s most valuable player in his junior and senior years. After graduating in 1971 he enrolled at Ball State University where he earned a double major in Industrial Education and Technology, and Physical Education. Timpe soon found that mak-

man team school record enroute to second. place at the invitational. A powerful Westview team was the only entry to place ahead of Wawasee as the Warriors left the other 23 teams in the dust. Jason Douglas led the Warriors with a time of 16:09. Other contributors to the combined time record included Jeff Carey, Steve Eastman, Eric Streby and Chad Jones.
