Nicaragua
What is really happening in Nicaragua? Who are the good guys? How bad are the bad guys? What is this Sandinista revolution? What is really going on in this country which seems to be so consistently in the news. Answers to these questions and more will be discussed when Lindenwood, a retreat and ministry center sponsored by The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, presents Edith Schneider, PHJC, in a day-long seminar on Nicaragua on Saturday, Sept. 24. Sister Edith, who just returned from two years in Nicaragua, will share her impressions of the country and its people. She will also look at the significance and history of the Sandinista revolution and its importance to the Nicaraguan people. Why are so many people so passionately loyal to the revolution while others are just as passionately opposed to it? Where do Christians stand? How does Nicaragua relate to the whole Central American issue? Most important to all is the answer to the questions: What can I do? Is there hope for peace? What can I as a United States citizen and Christian do? Lindenwood is located on the campus of Convent Ancilla Domini and Ancilla College on Union Road, two miles south of Donaldson and seven miles west of Plymouth. For more information on “A Journey With the Nicaraguan People,” call 935-1780. Youth to hold car wash Saturday Youth of grades eight through 12 at Mifford Christian Church will be working at a donations only car wash on Saturday, Sept. 24. The young workers invite all to stop by Bruce’s Marathon station on SR 15 in Milford between 10 a.m. and whenever the last car is washed. s z All the money raised by this event will go toward funding a mission trip next summer. The youth will be going to Show Low, Ariz., to work with the Indian children by holding a vacation Bible school. - Andy and Janice Shearer are managers of this mission. Andy is the son of former Milford pastor, Carl Shearer and his wife, Grace. The ambitious church workers need to raise at least $5,000 to enable them to go on this mission trip. They are pledged to give half of their funds to the mission after half is used for the trip.

What a Friend!
(By MARIETTA FULLER Guest Writer A friend has been said to be one who loves and understands you, will be there in times of sorrow, troubles, sickness, despair, trials and tribulations; and is also one who shares in your joys and prays for you in your time of need. * When someone has experienced one of these tokens of friendship you might hear him say, “What a friend I have in. . .”, but we are going to consider the only true friend we might have, and that friend is Jesus. There is a song entitled, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” each verse of which is explained in a tract by Gospel Tract Society in Independence, Mo. Jesus gives eternal love and everlasting life: “A friend loveth at all times” (Proverbs 17:17) and this speaks of Jesus. Greater love hath no man than this, that ci man lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13). Jesus paid out sin death on the cross (tree)

and sets us free to receive everlasting life if we but believe in Him (Acts 8:37). He is our friend because He died for us and we are His friends if we keep His commandments (John 15:12). Paul says in Romans 8:35, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or amine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? . . . For I am persuaded that neither death/ nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers nor things present, non things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the Love of God, which is in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Jesus gives us comfort: “Thy rod (the Word of God) and thy staff (the Holy Spirit), they comfort me“ (Psalm 23). “I will not leave you comfortless (John 14:18). Jesus will not leave us as orphans to travel this world alone, but will be alongside us as He in-dwells us in the Holy Spirit. (Gal. 2:20). “And I will pray the Father and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may.

abide with you forever” (John 14:6). Jesus gives us fellowship: “Lo, I am with you alway (Matt. 28:20). “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5). “God is faithful by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord” (! Cor. 1:9); “. .. and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and walk in darkness (sin), we lie and do not the truth" (1 John 1:3,6,7). Jesus goes through the storms of life with us: Remember the three Hebrew children who were thrown into the fiery furnace, with the fourth person in the fire being Jesus, and He brought them forth and they didn’t even smell of smoke. A storm arose on the Sea of Galilee and His disciples were * afraid, but Jesus said, “Peace, be still,” and the storm ceased. He is still saying that today. “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (J0hn14:27).

I By GLEN LONG Staff Writer Carl Thomas, Who grew up and went to school in Milford, stated, “God gives at least one gift to every person. It just took me a while to find that my main gift is showing mercy.” He and his family are presently in Roanoke on furlough from service in Nairobi, Kenya, and frequently visit his parents, Hazel and Marion Deeter, in Milford. Carl related that he wasn’t interested in studying while in high school and left school at age 17 to join the United States Coast Guard. “My philosophy at that time was to just have a good time,” he said. “I was a technically-minded person but did go on to finish my schooling in the Coast Guard. I actually received my diploma from Milford High.” . Carl said his education didn’t stop with formal schooling. Hh went on to attend Phoenix Col lege. While in the Coast Guard He served with Admiral Byrd in the Antarctic in 1955 and also served for two years in Viet Nam. “The biggest event in my life occurred after I attended diesel mechanic school in Miami, Fla.,” he said. “In 1958 I went to hear Jack Wyrtzen speak and the Lord began to work in my life J’ Everything after that seemed to be pointing the way God wanted him to go, according to Carl. “Os course, I didn’t know His will all at once. He made it known to me over time. ’ ’ After attending a lay evangelism meeting with his pastor in Fort Wayne, Carl and his wife, Phyllis, went to San Bernardino, Calif, for Campus Crusade for Christ training in outreach. He said while they were there, Dr. Bill Bright, founder and president of Campus Crusade For Christ, made the appeal at a service, “Lord, send a mechanic,” because the organization had many vehicles that needed repairs. Carl said that after the meeting he approached Dr. Bright and stated, “I’m a mechanic.” He then worked as a mechanic in San Bernardino from 1970 to 1973 and his wife worked as a secretary, also for Campus Crusade For Christ. “Our next move was unexpected,” Carl said. “A mah named Don Myers was going to Africa to serve in the mission field. The Lord woke me suddenly at 3 a.m. one night and confirmed in my

heart that we were also going to Africa!” “We had to raise a lot of money to go, but knew that the Christian life is continually learning to live for God and the Christian walk is a child-like faith.” After three years in Nairobi, Kenya, during which time Carl worked as a photographer, the couple came back to Indiana and bought a house in Roanoke, which is their home while they are on furlough. Carl said both he and Phyllis felt strongly drawn to return to work in Africa so he wrote Don Myers and they returned for another training period in California. They now had a daughter, Michelle, whose brother, Matthew, was born shortly after they arrived back in Nairobi. Carl had hired several Kenyan mechanics previously and the Lord showed him he should start a school to train Kenyan mechanics while spreading the Gospel. “Our students learn to be mechanics by hands-on training,” Carl stated. “Each student is then encouraged to pass his knowledge on to others. The students also learn how to share Christ personally with others. We believe that if a Christian is not sharing his faith with others, he is sinning.” Carl is firm in his faith and lives by the scriptures. He said he believes that only the Holy Spirit gives us the power to do what God

Nothing in this world is permanent except God's love We all make the mistake of assuming that anything on this earth will go on forever, and building our lives upon it; for this is simply not true. The tides of business can turn, and even long-established companies may suddenly go under. Whole towns can be leveled by earthquakes or tornadoes. Mountains rise and fall; shorelines advance and recede. Even the stars change positions, however imperceptibly, during our lifetimes. The lives of human beings are in a constant state of change, with the passage of time. The only thing in this world that remains unchanged is the God. We should thank Him for it and realize that it may cause even some of these tragedies to be blessings in disguise.

The Campus Crusade For Christ school in Nairobi has been operating for 2!4> years and will graduate its first group of students in six months. “Our goal is to have classes of 50 students in 10 years with nine of 10 instructors being Kenyan,” stated Carl. “Our whole school is designed to work for the Lord.” “We have many needs, including an executive director for the school and four experienced mechanics to come and help teach our students for tours of from six months to three years. We will be getting this message out as we are privileged to speak at area churches and organizations.” The Thomases plan to return to their work in Kenya in December.
