The other member of the 200 medley relay team was sophomore Dawn Firestone, who also finished third in the one meter diving event. Also contributing to first place efforts for the Lady Warriors were senior Sirena Bartow and sophomore Lori Boles, who comprised the other half of Wawasee’s first place 400 yd. freestyle relay team. Contributing second place finishes for the Wawasee cause against the Lady Chargers were: Titus (200 yd. individual medley), Boles (50 yd. freestyle and 100 yd. butterfly), junior Julie Gunn (one meter diving) and junior Chris Ridings (500 yd. freestyle). Registering third place efforts last night were: Bartow (100 and 200 yd. freestyle), sophomore Moni Lange (500 yd. freestyle) and freshpfan Sara Kline (100 yd. backstroke). Firestone, Ridings, Lange a'nd Kline also combined to place third in the 400 yd. freestyle relay. Caldwell stated that team members have been very consistent and that he is exceptionally happy with their progress thus far. He added that the team has also been training very hard between meets in order to get ready for the tough conference contests that are ahead. In addition to being 2-1, the Lady Warriors won the LaPorte Invitational last Saturday, Sept. 10, for the third year in a row. Wawasee recorded 140 points in the meet, out-distancing Plymouth (132) and Bridgeman, Mich (110). “We had the smallest team at LaPorte (12 swimmers) but everybody pulled together and everybody scored points, which is what all coaches like to see,” Caldwell said. Also last Saturday, the three Lady Warrior divers (Firestone, Julie Gunn and Kerstin Blunck) captured a second place finish at the Elkhart Diving Invitational. The Lady Warriors travel to Goshen tomorrow and then entertain Tippecanoe Valley next Monday before traveling to Bremen for a Tuesay, Sept. 20 meet. “Goshen has only six swimmers and Tippecanoe Valley is also down on numbers,” commented Caldwell. He added that these meets should prepare the team for upcoming conference foes Concord, North Wood, and Warsaw.

percent effort every day, whether it’s in a match or in a practice. “All you can ask is that a player do his best all of the time and then he’s a success, no matter if he wins or loses,” Brady emphasiz ed. He noted that good eye-hand coordination and good stroke skills are very important ingredients for a good tennis player. He added, however, that mental toughness is just as vital to success in tennis as any other Sport, if not more so. Brady commented that he is trying to build good athletes at Wawasee and, thus, he will have better tennis players. He remarked that his team spends a great deal of time during the summer working on tennis skills and then a lot of time during the season (between matches) working on improving athletic ability through conditioning. “You have to just go out and play in order to sharpen your skills and become a better player,” he stated, noting that a tennis player should play against different levels of competition in order to improve. “Against a player that isn’t quite as good as you are, you should work on improving your own weaknesses, and when you play against better competition they will always bring out the best play that you have to offer,” Brady stated. “Tennis is a unique sport because you can play it your entire life and you can improve your play all the time if you work at it,” he added. Although winning in any sport is nice, Brady concluded that he stresses that his players get enjoyment out of playing tennis.

Carey, Douglas set record

| By MITCHELL STINSON Staff Writer The Wawasee Warriors’ Jei Carey and Jason Douglas have been turning in good cross country performances all season long. They were the team to beat yesterday too, as they paired to set course records while leading Wawasee to victory at Northridge. Carey and Douglas finished* neck-and-neck as they both recorded times of 17:19 and put their names in the record book. Meanwhile, the Warriors notched an 18-42 victory over North Wood and a 15-50 win over Northridge in the three-way meet. The Warriors lost a squeaker to East Noble, 26-29, last Thursday, Sept. 8, but beat Lakeland in the meet at Lakeland. Carey and Douglas finished 1-2 in the competition. The Warriors turned in another strong performance last Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Northrup Invitational. They finished second out of a strong field of 11 teams. Fifth-ranked Westview finished first. In specialized competition, Douglas had the top time among the juniors and Douglas had the second best time among the seniors. The Warrior runners are gearing up for tough upcoming competition. They will face highlyranked competition at the West Noble Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 17, and will host a highlyranked Plymouth squad on Tuesday. Warriors coach Mark Timpe looks forward to the challenge. “We’re at the point where we’re thinking ‘state*, and that’s the kind of people they want to run (against),” he said. “The bigger the better.” In girls’ competition, the Warriors lost to Northridge, 45-17, and came out on the short end of a 33-22 decision to North Wood. They turned in a strong performance at Lakeland, though, dominating the meet with a 19-41 victory over Lakeland andals-50 win over East Noble.
