Warriors notch two straight wins
IBy MITCHELL STINSON Staff Writer The Wawasee Warriors girls’ golf team got over the .500 mark yesterday with a narrow 213-215 victory over the Warsaw Tigers at the Maxwelton Golf Course. It marked the second straight victory for the lady linksters and improved their season record to 5-4. Michelle Katsanis turned in the outstanding performance of the competition, finishing way ahead of the pack with a 44. Katsanis recorded pars on four of the nine holes en route to the victory. “Michelle even three-putted the last green,” said coach Mark Timpe. “She should have had a 42.” Timpe said that Katsanis’ performance was indicative of the ability she showed during last year’s season. “I know she can do it,” he said. “Finally, she’s doing it this year.” The Warriors’ Barb Butler finished second, coming in with a 50. Angie Manuel and Rachael Heaton were the top finishers for
Spikers begin winning ways
IBy MARK HUFFMAN Staff Writer SYRACUSE — The Wawasee Warriors had the lion’s share of successful volleys in holding off some Lions of a different kind at Wawasee High School last night. Coach Jill Yoder’s spikers endured some inconsistent play enroute to a 15-6, 16-14 drubbing of South Bend LaSalle. “We were kind of streaky, but we got the job done,” a relieved Coach Yoder said after the game. Wawasee started the match with strong net play in the first game, while the second game featured a six point run that enabled the Warriors to rally from a 12-6 deficit for the overtime Win. Two timeouts were wisely spent by Yoder asshe orchestrated her girls to the win, rallying from an 11-14 deficit in the late going to overtake the Lions with five straight points. Kriss Eisenhower gained the sixth of her service points for the final margin, with the ball clearing the net and landing in the front row, between three LaSalle defenders. “It shows a lot when a team can come back. That’s something we haven’t done in the past,” Yoder stated. Kris Robbins led in service points, with seven, while Eisenhower contributed six hits and two kills and Angela Kistler totaled 24 sets on the evening.

Butler recorded the meet’s low round, coming in with a 50. Katsanis and Teresa West finished in .a two-way tie for second, each recording a 52. Stacey Ray shot a 57 to notch the best Chargers score. The Warriors will place their winning streak on the line Thursday when they travel to meet Goshen. Coach Timpe doesn’t expect an easy time even though his team has beaten the' Redskins twice. “Goshen will be a tough match because they’ve previously beaten Warsaw,” he said. Kari Timm led the team with eight service points, while Kistler had 25 sets. The Warriors will attempt to extend a two game winning streak, that has given them a 3-6 record, when they travel to Plymouth Thursday. Matches against Warsaw and Westview will round out a three game road swing. “We expect Plymouth to* be tough, but these two wins should give the girls some confidence — they know they can win,” Yoder said, noting that the team would be working on its blocking today. “We’re working much better as a team now, but our blocking is still pretty weak,” she confirmed. The junior varsity team went 1-2 during a similar road stretch, losing a three match set to Bremen, 15-10, 445, 15-9, despite 19 sets by Kerri Speicher, eight spiking kills by Nicky Enyeart, and five service aces by Bobbi

Lady swimmers perform well despite opening loss
I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Staff Writer “We performed really well and if we move forward from this start we’ll be a good swim team before the season is over,” stated Wawasee Girls’ Swim Coach Tim Caldwell after watching the Lady Warriors lose to Penn, 74-95, last night in their seasor opener. Caldwell noted that Firestone injured her arm before the meet but still was willing to “suck it up” and perform to help the team. Caldwell remarked that Penn is possibly a top five caliber team in the state and that two of their swimmers, Lisa Rhodes and Karen Barnes, are definitely state finalist material. Wawasee received second place efforts against the Kingswomen from senior Sirena Bartow in the 200-yard freestyle (2:21.77); junior co-captain Sherry Payne in the 50-yard freestyle (27.61), and sophomore Moni Lange in_ the 500-yard freestyle (6:30 80). Saturday, Sept. 10," Wawasee will be involved in the LaPorte Invitational, as well as the Elkhart Invitational for the divers on the team. Caldwell commented that the Lady Warriors are the defending champions of the LaPorte meet and that this year it should be an exciting event, with 16 teams participating.
