Jim Evans manages managers
1 By KATE WOLFORD I Staff Writer & a \ “I do a little bit of everything. I’m basically responsible for the entire operation.” That is how Jim Evans of Syracuse describes his work for Augsburger’s Supermarkets. It’s also a fine way to describe his new responsibility as Northern Communities Division Head for the United Way Fund Drive, which officiallv kicks-off on Sept. 8. Profile The Oklahoma City native arid father of three was a fund s- drive captain of Syracuse for three years before he assumed his division head post and is a firm believer in the work United Way does in this county. “I saw what the United Way was doing in the Syracuse community,” Jim says. “I was impressed with the financial commitment that the United Way (gave) to the agencies in Syracuse.” The two agencies are the Lakeland Community Day Care Center and the Lakeland Youth Center. Jim is in charge of the fund drives in Syracuse, North Webster, Milford and Leesburg. He has a total goal of $17,600 for all four communities. The the overall county goal is $600,000, which Jim feels certain will be surpassed. He and other area volunteers will be soliciting donations primarily from private citizens and small businesses without United Way payroll deductions. Jim doesn’t anticipate having to twist arms to achieve the northern communities goal. “Once people understand what they (United Way) do,” he explains, “you don’t even have to

ask for money; ” they just want to give. He says he wants to get as many people involved as possible. His work with Augsburger’s is also a subject that Jim discusses enthusiastically. “I manage the managers,” he says smilingly. He in turn reports to his father-in-law 13th District State Senator John Augsburger, who owns the stores. Jim likes the flexibility that managing the stores in North Webster and Syracuse brings him. “I get to do what I want to do,” he enthuses, adding, “I like the challenge of a really fast moving business.” No doubt he’ll continue to get that as there will soon be a third Augsburger’s in Goshen. Jim’s liberal arts degree with an emphasis on psychology and theology is hardly what people might expect as preparation for the world of business. He holds a master’s degree in psychology as well. However, Jim says, “I always wanted to be a businessman.” As a matter of fact, Jim’s schooling led him to his current work. He met his wife, the former Kim Augsburger, while both were attending Ozark Bible College in Joplin, Mo. Six and a half years ago they moved to Syracuse and Jim began to work with Augsburger’s. Jim and Kim have three children: Karissa age eight, J.J. age six and Drew age three. The couple is active in their church, the Christian Church of Milford. Jim teaches a Sunday morning Bible study class and is also involved in church discussion groups. “We’re both pretty active in the congregation,” Jim asserts. Karissa, J. J. and Drew are also a main focus for Jim, and the family enjoys waterskiiing together. “We splurged and bought a boat this year,” Jim says. It’s surprising that Jim finds time for any reading, but he does. He enjoys reading newspapers and magazines and he considers the study and discussion of politics a hobby. He also like all kinds of music. “There really isn't anything that I don’t like to listen to,” Jim states. Considering his many interests and goals, that’s not surprising.
