Years ago, when movies were black and white, this incident made a lasting impression on me. A young, handsome volunteer sacrificed his blond wavy hair for a close-crop and learned German, along with a few sneaky tricks in the spy business taught him by US agents. Months later, after extensive training, and on a very dark night, he parachuted into enemy territory, hid the chute under brush and unrumpled, in a dark suit, strolled into a popular country inn, his destination. He ordered from the menu in perfect German, nodded politely toward two Army officers and his mission went well enough — until he cut his steak and switched his fork to his right hand. Nearly everyone in our little theater sucked in air and whispered, “Oh! No!” Many years later I visited Germany and the first night out we dined in a famous, large, highraftered beerhall filled with oompah music and loud singing. My stein was half empty, the place was warm and I felt giddy and for some reason remembered this

old movie. I stood up. It was urgent I have their immediate attention. “Listen, my friends,” I told my American tablemates. “If you don’t want to be dragged away, thrown into a dungeon and never heard of again, you’d better eat as these people do! So watch! ” They laughed but I busied studying the marvelous left-handed upside-down maneuverings of German-held forks. Such dexterity! Since then, I’ve peeked at people everyday — at breakfast, lunch, dinner. I especially watch people eating at banquets, cocktail parties and wedding receptions. I spy at family reunions, church socials and fish tents . . . college cafeterias, park benches and tables, highway rest stops, airport lounges and supper clubs, naming a few. There are tired eaters leaning on elbows pushing food into their mouths; there are shovelers shoveling and tired shovelers leaning. Some play imaginary checkers — picking up water glasses, salad bowls, bread/butter plates, coffee cups and saucers moving them to easierreached places. Sdrrie completely, ignore napkins; others stack

A one-car accident on CR 1000E in Tippecanoe Township last Saturday at 2 p.m. caused up to an estimated SI,OOO in damages to a 1975 Mustang driven by Donald Young, 19, 1320 S. Martin St., Ligonier. Young’s auto then left the roadway, went into a ditch, and then rolled over. Andrew Pavel, 77, co-owner of Barbee Hotel and Restaurant in North Webster, was injured Sunday night at 8:45 p.m. when he was struck by a car on Barbee Lake Road in front of his hotel. Shawna Hawk Rocha, 30, Land O Lakes, Fla., told police that she was eastbound on Barbee Lake Road when Pavel stepped in front of her. Pavel, who suffered a fractured leg in the accident, is in stable condition at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he is awaiting surgery.
plates and shove out of the way to accommodate dessert. Children use water glasses as finger bowls or gurgle in them making obscene noises; too, kids are knife-lickers, pizza throwers and spaghetti suckers. And, very few say “excuse me” if they belch... or worse. Somewhere along the line, most of us learned good table manners. We washed our hands including the backs and hung baseball caps on the hall tree before sitting down. We sat straight, no elbows on the board! We placed a napkin in our lap, we didn’t slurp, hurry or drink milk with fish. If we wanted a dish, we asked, “Please, would you pass . . .” and we said, “Thank you,” when it was. We used flatware correctly and once used, was placed on a dish not on the cloth. Also, we used a small piece of bread to chase the past pea on our plate onto a fork — not a finger. Occasionally, if I don’t order mashed potatoes and gravy, I eat as most Europeans do, despite the fact some family members and several friends believe this pretentious. - But on the other side of the coin, I’ve long ago stopped stirring up naughty four-letter words in my alphabet soup. . .
