Barb Butler, were members on Wawasee’s team that competed in the state tournament a couple of years ago. Timpe is counting on this experience to be a driving force for the Warriors’ success this season. However, last year’s team failed to advance into regional action. It was the first time, according to Timpe, that Wawasee failed to qualify for regional competition. < ' He is looking to remedy this problem in 1988. Leading the way for Wawasee will be Katsanis and Butler. Both players took turns at the number one position last year. At season’s end, Katsanis held the position, and advanced into the regional.

Welborn's work published in Wrestling U.S.A.

WARSAW — Warsaw Community High School technique wrestling coach Rich Welborn will have an article published in Wrestling U.S.A. magazine in the fall. Welborn’s literary work deals with success in wrestling. “This is quite an honor to have something published in this type of magazine,” said Welborn about his published work. “Wrestling U.S.A. is a prestigious magazine.” This will be the seventh wrestling-oriented article Welborn has had published. Welborn has coached wrestling for 30 years, 10 at Wawasee High School. During his tenure with the Warriors, his teams won four consecutive sectional championships, finished the season state ranked four times, won two regional titles and won the Nor•thern Lakes Conference twice.

“They are very close,” said Timpe, referring to their skills. “They should be able to push each other this year and have good years.” Katsanis finished 1987 with a 45.8 average over nine holes. Butler was a shade higher, finishing at 46.3. But like any coach, Timpe is pointing out the improved players that will make the Warriors better this year. Darcey Smith, a junior, has caught the eye of the mentor after two days of practice. “Darcey is the most improved player on this team, she played a lot of golf during the summer,” insisted Timpe. “I think she will

be able to fill the gap created by Kirkdorffer’s graduation. She looks good.” . Last year, Smith registered a 62.1 average over nine holes. Timpe looks for the oncoming player to average in the mid 50s this season. Other key performers for the ’BB Warriors include Teresa West and Audra Bouse. West finished a year ago with a 56.8 norm, while Bouse saw limited varsity action. “I really think we will be better this year than last,” confessed Timpe. “It will be a little difficult at first, having just five practices, weather permitting, before our first match. In time, we will be fine.” The Warriors list six regular season matches on their home schedule this season, four of them consecutively. Os conference matches, Wawasee will host Northridge (with Columbia City) on Wednesday, Aug. 24, and Warsaw, Tuesday, Sept. 6. The IHSAA sectional will elude Wawasee’s home matches on Saturday, Sept. 24. “We are looking forward to the season, it should be a good one,” added Timpe.
