Cesco resigns, Goshert accepts Wawasee golf position

As a sophomore, the Spartans finished 17th in the nation among N.A.I.A. schools. “We will work very hard to keep up the tradition of Wawasee golf,” admitted the first-year varsity boys’ golf coach. “We don’t plan on missing a beat between last year and this year.” Cesco’s new position will be part-time this year but will increase into a full-time job in 1989. The former Wawasee coach is presently out of town and unavailable for comment.

VOLLEYBALL SYRACUSE - Wawasee’s girls’ volleyball team will begin practicing Monday, Aug. 8, from 7-9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the high school. Players must have completed a physical examination prior to practicing. Forms for the examination are in the main office of the high school. SWIM SYRACUSE - Wawasee High School girls’ swim team will begin practice for the upcoming season Monday, Aug. 8, at 9 a.m. at the high school. Practice will end at 12-noon. Water ski team wins

SYRACUSE — The Water Ski, Inc. ski team, Cindonway Shores in Syracuse, won the state tournament championship this past weekend at Cindonway Shores and Camelot Lake. Pacing the victorious squad was Brandon Bucher’s four first place performances in the junior boys’ division. Bucher captured the slalom, tricks, jump and overall titles. In winning the overall competition with 1,583 points, Bucher set a new state record. Bucher, with his performance Saturday, qualified for national competition later this year.

Other first places won by area performers include Todd Smith’s 139-foot jump in men’s division I competition. Steve Plummer of North Webster leaped 130 feet in division II and totaled 1,880 points for the overall crown. Bill Hartman went 87 feet in the novice men’s division for an individual victory, while Cindy Harper sailed 33 feet in the women’s novice division. Shawna Miller won the slalom competition in the girls division, while Jane Tully won the women’s division I jump category with a 94-foot jump. Jill Tully won the slalom in the women’s division I event.

Meanwhile, several area performers were honored following the competition with some prestigious awards. Jan Karr, North Webster, was awarded the Rollie Williams Memorial award for her outstanding service to the sport in the state of Indiana. This award is one of the highest given in water skiing. Smith won the Mark Wiggs Memorial Jump award for the longest jump in the tournament, while Jane Tully was given the Bill Tully Memorial award for sportsmanship.
