David and Susie Butler live and breathe sign design and production
I By KATE WOLFORD Staff Writer
There are signs everywhere in this world and in this area. Billboards, small signs, big signs and body signs in the form of tee-shirts dot the landscape. In the Lakeland area, chances are those signs were designed and executed by David and Susie Butler. David is the artist and sign designer. He says his mother, also an artist, introduced him to the fine arts as a child, and in high school, his interest quickened. Profile “I got to liking it,” says David. “I took all the art courses in high school.” A high school art teacher introduced him to Dutch Mullet, an artist and sign designer in North Webster. David says, ‘‘He basically took me in and taught me everything.” The Butlers have been married and working at their business, Butler Signs, for 10 years. Theirs is the only sign design business in Syracuse, and as a result, they live and breathe sign design and production. “We haven’t seen a slowdown in four years,” David reports. Susie agrees that the pace is hectic, saying, “It’s really filled up our whole lives.” The Butlers say they are looking to relax the relentless pace or their business. “All of our waking hours were spent here at the shop up until last week when we changed our policy,” David explains. From now on they plan to work from 7

Susie • says however, that he has abilities in many areas of the fine arts. But like all artists and non-artists, he has to eat. “You have to have an occupation that puts food on the table,” Susie says, sounding like a businessperson. She is one. She is in charge of the business side of Butler Signs, as well the actual silk-screening process for tee-shirts. Susie extols David’s abilities in sculpting and painting, but has a practical view of the fine arts. “When you concentrate on the fine arts,” she states, “you have to be extremely wealthy

just to support that. You hit it big when you’re dead or really old. You have to eat. ” Like many professionals, Dave and Susie have joined an association that allows them to meet and share ideas with others working in their field. The “Letterheads” is an organization for people involved with sign creation, and the Butlers are enthusiastic members. David describes it as “A group of sign painters that get together, wherever, whenever and share ideas projects and trade secrets.” Their involvement with the group began auspiciously less than a year ago. After attending their first meeting, David ended up having a design on the cover of a sign design trade publication called “Signs of the Times.” “It just blossomed from there,” Susie declares. David enjoys seeing the work of other sign painters in the association. He points out that as he and Susie have the only sign business in town, “We might think we’re the top of the class here, but there is nothing to compare it to.” “You get involved with something like ‘Letterheads’ and you’re dealing with some of the best sign painters in the country,” he continues. Adding, “It fires you up to do even better. It’s all about self-improvement.” Susie enjoys the friendship being a part of the group gives the Butlers. “They’re just really neat people,” she says enthusiastically. Susie says that they already know other “Letterheads” all around the country. With their strong commitment to Butler Signs, David and Susie don’t have much spare time. Shilo, their daughter does get to act as office manager David jokes, but they would like some more time away from the business. Despite all the demands of Butler Signs, the Butlers seem satisfied with their lives. “We really enjoy our work,” says Susie. David concurs saying, “There’s a lot of gratification in being a sign painter.”
