Theta Sigma wins state painting honor with entry

The 1988 National Convention ' of Psi lota Xi ended on a sweet note for North Webster’s Theta Sigma Chapter. The chapter won the painting honors for the Northern District, a beautiful winter water color titled “Hendricks County Farm” by artist Dave Tipton. Four paintings are awarded in the Hoosier Salon Drawing each year — all Indiana artists — funded by Psi lota Xi f National Projects committee totaling $1,300 for 1988. The North Webster painting, “Hendricks County Farm” was selected by delegates Cyndi Heckaman and Page Story. The painting, valued at S3OO wilP be donated to the North Webster Library by Theta Sigma. The convention was held June 23-25 at the South Bend Marriott and Century Center Convention Hall. The special guest speaker was Gloria Cooper, director of public information at Southwestern Michigan College.

Responsibility changes announced at CTB

Richard (Dick) Gentry, Ray Marttila, Ray Swartzendruber, and Michael Kohls all have had changes in their job responsibilities, according to James C. Evans, president of CTB Inc. Also attending from North Webster were Norma Eisaman, vice president, and Jodi Sautter, publicity. Psi lota Xi has more than 150 chapters with over 6,000 members. The primary purpose of Psi lota Xi is to be; of service with time, money, and love in a cooperative effort with the community, helping those who can not help themselves. The 1988 total contributions to charitable programs was reported at $554,668, addfed to the thousands of hours iurvolunteer time with T.L.C., and it makes a proud organization. The Speech and Hearing Foundation were so pleased with their donations from Psi lota Xi that they sent their executive secretary to thank the convention. Psi lota Xi is also dedicated to promoting the arts. A generous $59,000+ was the total donations towards musical projects, and over $70,000 went to art projects this past year. That includes local scholarships to Wawasee and Fort Wayne, not to mention Indiana University and area symphonies.

Pedestrian injured

Four accidents were investigated by Syracuse Police between last Thursday, July 21, and Saturday, July 23, with one pedestrian suffering injuries in one of the incidents. Rosanna Gail Butler, 6, Syracuse, was treated for bruises to her left ankle and forearms after her bicycle collided with a 1977 Ford Thunderbird driven by Jeffery N. Reed, 31, Syracuse. Butler lost control of her bike and collided with the right front bumperof the Reed vehicle while he was traveling north on Harkless Drive. Reed attempted to enter the southboundlane to avoid the accident. Up to S2OO damage was done to his vehicle in the accident, which occurred at 5:23 p.m. Saturday, July 23. Driver inattention contributed Auto theft investigation continues Syracuse and Milford Police Departments are continuing their investigation into an auto theft. The theft is believed to have occurred in Milford late Sunday, July 24. John Beer, 212 South Henry St., Milford, notified police at 6:32 a.m. Monday, July 25, that his 1986 Chevrolet had been stolen from his home. The vehicle had been recovered prior to his report. - Syracuse Police were called to a property damage accident at 12:13 a.m. Monday in the city limits. The vehicle involved, which sustained extensive damage, belonged to Beer.

Stofer, 16, Warsaw, was traveling north on the SR 13 Access Road on a 1972 Honda Hawk motorcycle when a pick-up truck turned left in front of him. Stofer attempted to avoid the accident by veering to the right, past the second vehicle, but it struck his cycle on the left muffler, causing S2OO damage. The other driver left the scene of the accident. Up to SI,OOO damage was caused to two separate vehicles in an accident attributed to brake failure at 4:08 p.m. Friday, July 22. David W. Ridings Jr., 18, Syracuse, was traveling north on Harkless Road, following another vehicle with his 1972 Volkswagen buggie. The second vehicle slowed and Riding attempted to apply his brakes, which apparently failed, causing him to swerve to avoid rear-ending the second automobile. He entered the southbound lane and struck the front buipper and side of a 1984 Plymouth Reliant, driven by Linda F. Hickey, 40, Syracuse, near the CRI2OON intersection. An obstructed view may have contributed to a two vehicle collision at 2:32 p.m. Thursday, July 21. Ryan L. Stuckman, 16, Syracuse, pulled a 1978 Chevrolet pick-up from the intersection of Harkless Drive and Pickwick Drive when he collided with a 1979 Oldsmobile, which was traveling east on Pickwick Driyp. Bushes at the corner of the intersection were believed to have hampered Stuckman’s view. Up to SI,OOO damage was caused to the Stuckman truck and the second vehicle, which was driven by Nicholas E. Roth, 22, Fort Wayne.

10 YEARS AGO. JULY 19.1978 The annual meeting of the Waubee Lake Property Owners Association was held Monday, July 10, at the Milford Fire Station. Officers named are as follows: Jim Stork, president; Arden Ball, vice president; and Ruby Sawyer, secretarytreasurer. Funeral services were held in the Milford Christian Church at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, July 18, for Cletus S. Myers, 86, 306 South Front Street, Syracuse. Myers owned and operated C. S. Myers Ford in Milford and Syracuse for 40 years. Three members of the Milford Junior Merry Maidens 4-H Club will participate in the area 4-H demonstration contest at La Ville High School near Lakeville. Janet Wall will be participating in the senior division, while Danae Berkeypile and Stacy Wall will be participating in the junior division. The Milford Little League AllStars defeated Sidney 18-0 when the two teams met recently. Mike Hernandez smashed a double, triple and a home run; Brad Weisser collected a two-run homer and scored three runs as Milford rolled to an easy victory. Brian Henson, Tony Blackburn and Karl Schmucker pitched a three-hit shut-out. They fanned 14 batters and walked only three. Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Fox have just returned from Dahlgren, Va., visiting Mrs. Fox’s nephew and family, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Whitehead and three children. Included among the contracts for improvements, which were approved by the IDOH on July 15, is a section of roadways in Kosciusko County. SR 13 from the junction of US 30 to the south city limits of North Webster is slated for improvements. Work by September 6 and is scheduled to be completed within 30 days. The improvements will be handled by E & B Paving, Inc. of Anderson, who submitted a bid of $186,577.00 for the projects. Area residents booked at jail The following persons were booked in the Kosciusko County Jail during the past week: Brian Keith Beaver, 22, r 1 box 150, Cromwell, was charged with conversion and released on $250 bond. Brian Phillip Butler, 21, r 1 box 159, Milford, was booked on theft charges and held for DeKalb County. Larry Dean Herron, 40, r 1, Leesburg, was charged with public intoxication and released on $175 bond. Jason Patrick Baker, 16, P.O. Box 365, Milford, was sentenced to five days in the county jail. Rick Alan Clipfell, 23,525 South Harrison St., Syracuse, was charged with driving under the influence and driving while suspended. He was released on $450 bond. John VanPherson and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Price attended from here. The International Harvest Co., had their cameraman at the Earl Tom farm Wednesday, last week, taking pictures during the demonstration of the combine thresher. A large group of farmers attended the demonstration. Wheat threshing in this locality was started the fore part of this week. Hessian fly, rust and unseasonable weather took its toll in most of the wheat fields of this community, and the yields are expected to be far below the normal average. Mrs. Anna Wise has been employed as a nurse at the Belmont hospital in Chicago. She began her duties there last week. The Merry Maidens 4-H club entertained the Merry Manequins club at the home of Mary Jane Shuder on Tuesday afternoon from two until four o’clock. The girls presented a very interesting and much appreciated program to their young guests in the following order: welcome, Helen Graff; group songs, Edna Hollar; vocal duet, Helen and Katherine Graff; reading, Esther Mathews; piano solo, Laurabelle Ferverda; guitar solo, Helen Graff; talk by County Agent Joe Clark; and demonstration by Wretha Reuter. Jesse Miller, Amy Hollar, Randall Dewart, Robert Bushong and Burris Sharp went to Chicago, Sunday, where they witnessed a double header ball game between the Cubs and Boston.
