A camping we will g 0...
After much discussion and planning this reporter’s family decided to take a camping trip, our first ever. When Hubby asked me where I would like to go camping, I replied, “Any place where we can get home in a half hour. ” The children thought camping was a wonderful idea, several friends offered encouragement by telling me stories of their funfilled camping trips and Hubby, a former Boy Scout, was elated at the prospect of once again taking to the woods. We rented a rag-top, pull-along camper that would sleep four people. Hubby insisted we take the somewhat ancient, down filled sleeping bags he and his brother had used as Boy Scouts. It seemed like the piles of cooking utensils, bedding, clothing, etc. would never fit into the camper. But, it was all squeezed in somewhere, along with a borrowed camp stove, lantern and ice cooler. The first couple of days we stayed at McCormick’s Creek State Park. One quick glance and the experienced campers around us knew this was our first trip. Everyone was so nice. They helped us get our camper set up, offered suggestions and information. One couple, when they found we were going down to the Ohio River, gave us discount passes so we could take the children to see Santa Claus Land. The next morning we found strange looking animal foot prints all over our picnic table and a package of breakfast rolls was missing. We had been so silly as to leave the rolls out on the picnic table all night and a raccoon carried them off into the woods. The children had a great time following the trail of foot prints and breakfast roll crumbs to the base of a big tree about 100 feet Lakeland Quilt club has carry-in - Lakeland Quilt club members and their guests met for a carryin supper on July llfeat the home of Rita Slankard. was given of the recent club trip to Honeyville General Store, Topeka. from where we were camped. We have had some good laughs overthe years about the time the raccoons ate our breakfast. Having managed a few days in the great outdoors without being eaten alive by wild animals or starved into devouring locusts and rats this reporter’s nerves settled down “full throttle” to a low pitched “squeak”. I still wasn’t convinced, about this business of camping. We drove down to Lincoln State Park in southern Indiana and made a camp in a wooded area along the lake shore. There weren’t too many people around and it was a beautiful place. The following morning we woke to find the coverings on our old down sleeping bags was coming apart. It looked like there had been an early snowfall inside the camper. Every movement clouds of down into the air. Sweeping with a broom made matters worse. We gathered up handfuls of down and tried to put it in a plastic bag. Most of it floated away before we could ever get it in the bag. We did the best we could and finished the job with the vacuum sweeper after we got home.

There was a young couple camped behind us. They tried to start a camp fire by using gasoline. The resulting explosion and fire nearly put us all in orbit. No serious damage was done but I’ve never seen park rangers so angry. It could have been a disasterous situation. Later, at the swimming beach on the lake, a youngster walked up to us with an empty half gallon milk carton. He said, “I have a snake in this carton and I can’t find a ranger to tell me what kind it is.” Trying to be helpful, we asked him to open the top of the carton. He did, and there we were staring into the face of a very annoyed looking copperhead snake. We quickly helped the youngster locate a ranger who took care of the situation. Having survived breakfast roll stealing raccoons, sleeping bags that leaked down stuffing, a gasoline explosion, and a confrontation with a poisonous snake, all within a week, this reporter was beginning to actually like camping. I asked Hubby, “Is it always this exciting?” “I don’t know,” he replied, “But let’s not tell anyone the raccoons ate our breakfast.”
