New minister is 'excited te be here'
By GLEN LONG Staff Writer
“When we drove into Syracuse last week it just felt like home,” was one of the comments received from Ronald (Ron) Cox, new pastor at the United Pentecostal Church in Syracuse, when he was asked how he likes the Lakeland area. “We’re excited to be here. I’m anticipating something happening in our church that people in the area have never experienced before/’ he stated. “Our hearts are open, our home is open and our church is open.” . The pastor’s wife, Jackie, added, “We like Syracuse” and their children, Seth, five, and Bethany, two, nodded in agreement. “We’re expecting great things here,” continued Ron enthusiastically. “We want to build a strong youth department. We’ve come here with the call of Balloon liftoff at Christian Church on July 24 Brian Wilcox, youth minister at Christian Church in Milford, stated, “Be a part of the excitement in Sunday, July 24, as we take part in a Vacation Bible School balloon lift-off. All of the kids who are pre-registered for our “Champions For Jesus” Vacation Bible School will be given balloons. * We will form a parade line after morning service and walk to the Lakeland Loving Care nursing home, where we will set the balloons free. A card on each balloon will have a picture of “Spunky, the Eagle,” who is our mascot. The student releasing the card that travels the greatest distance and is reported back to us will receive a Children’s Bible Dictionary on the closing day of VBS. Area residents are urged to visit the church office between now and the 24th to register for VBS. Then be sure to be at the church on the 24th to enjoy morning worship and take part in the balloon lift-off. Dates for Vacation Bible School are August 8-12 from 6:30 to 9 p.nf. each evening. Signup now!”

God on our lives.” He said that the Syracuse church has a great foundation on which to build and stated, “We’re going to give God all the glory for everything that happens.” The Cox family comes to Syracuse from Granite City, 111., a metro area of St. Louis, where Ron was lay minister at First United Pentecostal Church for one year. Before that, he was an assistant pastor in Terre Haute. Originally from Memphis, Tenn., the pastor received his training at Jackson College of Ministries in Jackson, Miss. He met his wife at college and was the roommate of Ron Looney, the pastor he replaces in Syracuse. The Looneys have moved to Elkhart, where Ron Looney is associate pastor at “Life Tabernacle” United Pentecostal Church of Elkhart. Pastor Cox is scheduled to speak at Boat-in Worship at Oakwood on Sunday, Aug. 21. “I believe the Boat-in Worship is a natural method of outreach,” he stated. He has already attended one meeting of the SyracuseWawasee Ministerial Association and said he is looking forward to working with the other area pastors. . The congregation of Syracuse United Pentecostal Church, which numbers about 60 members, held a dinner on Sunday, July 10, to welcome the Cox family to Syracuse and honor Pastor Looney and his family as they move to Elkhart. WCBC goes to Camp Mack Wawasee* Community Bible Church (WCBC), located northeast of Milford, is normally filled with worshippers on Sunday mornings. However, it will be strangely quiet on July 17. This is because church services will be held at Camp Mack, on the north side of Waubee Lake. Congregation members and guests are invited to attend for a time of worshm, fun, fellowship andjood. The day will start with church at 8:30 a.m. The service will be followed by swimming, volleyball, softball, horseshoe pitching, boating, visiting and relaxing. The ddy’s activities will endatl:3op.mJ
