Bill Durbin: Rehabitatg not remove,
L By JENNIFER WOODWARD Staff Writer Bill Durbin, Milford’s new housing commissioner, is all set for his new responsibilities. Durbin decided to take on the job as commissioner because he knew there was a need and he felt he was the man to fill the job. He has had previous building experience and since he is fairly new to the Milford community he felt that this was a good way to become involved with the town. Profile Durbin states that it is too early to tell what his job as housing commissioner will be but, he does know what he does not want, “I’m not in favor of a town filled with vacant lots. We should fix up rather than tear down. I’m willing to work with people who need help or advice so that we may rehabilitate rather than remove.” Durbin is relatively new to the area. He moved to Indiana two years ago from Battle Creek, Mich. He is a maintenance supervisor at Vitco, a porcelain and metal stamping business, in Nappanee. He has been a master

electrician for the past 20 years and a building contractor for three years. When asked about his education, Durbin simply stated, “I went to high school and then the school of hard knocks.” He enjoys visiting antique shops and flea markets. One of his main hobbies is collecting farm toys, miniature tractors and farm implements, a hobby he has been doing for the past eight years. He belongs to a farm toy club in Goshen and has even discovered three or four other farm toy collectors in Milford. “Indiana is one of the hot spots for farm toy collectors,” he explains. ... His main hobby is that of the old Orn nursing home. He purchased the nursing home last fall and moved into it in March of this year. He isn’t quite sure what his definite plans for the home will be but, he’s currently restoring the it for future use. He enjoys Milford and is happy to be involved with the comrhunity. “I love Milford tremendously,” Durbin enthuses. “A small town always has that special charm. I’ve found the quiet and friendliness very enjoyable.” Long term plans for the future are simply “to retire early!” He feels Milford will be the ideal place for such a retirement. “I have a big old house, a large yard, and plenty of room for my hobbies.” What more could one ever ask for?
