Balls fly wrong way for Warriors

The balls were flying for the Wawasee girls softball team during the semifinal round of the East Noble Sectional Monday afternoon. Problem was, the flying they did was while the Warriors were on the field, with errant throws and misfielded balls accounting for 11 unearned runs and nine errors. KENDALLVILLE — Wawasee captured its first girls softball - sectional victory last Wednesday ’ when the Warriors rallied with three runs in the 10th inning to derail Garrett, 13-12, at East No- ’ ble. The Railroaders entered post season play as heavy favorites to take the East Noble sectional. Garrett had a 17-6 mark, considerably better than the War-riors’4-17 mark. But the Warriors proved that regular season records are meaningless ifisectional competition.

After falling behind 3-0 in the second, Wawasee finally dented the plate in the third. In the Warriors’ two-run uprising, Lai Reed opened the inning with a walk. After Julie Richcreek reached base on an error, Jennifer Brumbaugh singled, scoring Reed. Stacey Lent’s groundout brought in Richcreek with Wawasee’s final run in the inning. Wawasee exploded for four runs in the fourth, the big blow being a two-run single by Amy Barton. The Warriors plated a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings but the Railroaders rallied. A five-run sixth closed Wawasee’s 10-4 lead to one, 10-9, entering the final inning. Wawasee failed to score in the seventh, and when Garrett crossed the plate in the seventh, the game went into extra innings. After both teams went scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings, Wawasee erupted for three runs in the 10th. Richcreek opened the frame with a walk and the Warriors promptly scored on Brumbaugh’s

Three hitter ends sectional hopes

Goshen junior righthander David Lee reeled a three hitter at Goshen Monday afternoon to end the Wawasee Warriors season on a sour note, 8-0. The Redskins took an early lead by hitting the first pitch of the sectional over the left centerfield fence. Catcher Erik Gouker provided the blast, while a double and single were paired later in the inning to provide a 2-0 score. Warrior pitcher Mike VanDiepenbos settled down in the second and third by shutting out the Goshen nine, but a pair of runs in the middle innings shut the door on the senior’s career. Tony Clouse winner in Great Race VIII

Area athletes participated in the Great Race VIII held on Monday in Elkhart. A variety of races were held at this great event. The 20K Run (Men) began at the corner of Third and Franklin streets in Elkhart and ended on Lincoln Avenue in Goshen. Tony Clouse, 50, of Syracuse finished first in Men Age 50-59 with a time of 1:29:17. He finished overall at 42. Gregory Weisser, 24, of Milford finished 12th overall with a time of 1:17:27. Garrett scored twice in the bottom of the 10th but could get no closer. Michelle Coy gained the victory for Wawasee as she went the distance. Wawasee almost entered the scoring column in the fourth inning, but an umpire ruled that a Warrior runner left third base before a sacrifice fly was caught. Dan O’Haver, Matt Koble, and Adam Wilson provided the three hits, all singles, for Wawasee. Goshen Coach Brian Eldridge' expected his first sectional win to be a closer game, having fought the Warriors in a 5-4 win earlier in the season. Wawasee finishes the season at 5-22. Goshen will face Fairfield, a 10-0 winner over Jimtown, in the second game of the sectional finals at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday. June 4.

Wysong re-enters H.S. ranks

ELKHART — Former Wawasee head basketball coach John Wysong has been named head boys’ basketball coach at Elkhart Memorial, according to athletic director Tom Firestone. w,, - x -, JOHN Ph P WYSONG M Wysong has coached high school basketball eight years, five at Wawasee. His accumulative record is 113-66 and he has won one sectional championship.

SOUTH WHITLEY - Wawasee closed its regular season with another loss Thursday afternoon at Whitko belted the Warriors 7-2. The loss moved Wawasee’s seasonal mark to 5-21 entering Monday’s Goshen sectional. The Warriors fell to the host Redskins, 8-0, and were eliminated from post-season play. The host Wildcats put four runs on the board in the second inning to breeze to their ninth win in 24 games. Whitko added two runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth to increase its margin. Wawasee’s two runs came in its last at bat.

Leading the Warriors’ five hit attack was Jay Koontz. The junior collected a pair of singles, while Fred Crouch doubled and Kevin Manning and Tony Hostetter each singled. Rodney Coy took the pitching loss for Wawasee. He joined with Dan O’Haver to limit the Wildcats to nine hits. The pair of hurlers struck out six and walked four in the contest. Racing returns NEW PARIS — Racing returns to the New Paris Speedway Saturday night with the outlaw super late models, late models, and street socks scheduled. Gates open at 2, time trials are 5, and racing set for 7 p.m. After the races, the Ambush Chili Gang will have a chili cookout and weiner roast. Any donations made will go to help injured race drivers. Meanwhile, on the track more outlaw cars are coming with Bob Brown, Bobby Blount, and Ken Geans expected to race. Clete Caywood and Fred Reed remain one and two in the outlaw points race. * The late models are led by Doug Hanna. Many new cars are expected in this class. The street stock class is still up for grabs. It seems wrecks knock the favorites out of action every week.
