Working mother Joellen Free says her children are number one priority
1 By KATE WOLFORD Staff Writer Joellen Free, of Milford, spends much of her life helping others, and, when she gets the chance, herself. A single mother with a career, Joellen juggles the demands of parenting her daughter Suellen, age 20; son John, age 15; and her youngest, Doug, age 13, as well as her duties as manager at the “It’s For You” figure salon. > Profile Her children are Joellen’s number one priority, and while she admits that filling the role of both mother and father can be difficult, she sees some positive results. “They (her kids) have become more self-reliant, independent, and can carry more responsibility,” she* says with a smile. Joellen has been a single parent for eleven years, and along the way, has gained some wisdom. Her advice for other parents? “You’ve got to listen,” Joellen says emphatically. “People will tell you what they need if you just listen.” Finding time to spend with her children is also important to Joellen, and she enjoys watching them pursue

sports and other activities. Her daughter Sue, who just completed her sophmore year at Ball State, plays the piano; her middle child John dives at Wawasee High School, where he will be a sophmore next fall; and Doug, who will be a freshman at Wawasee High next year, plays in the band. In addition to helping her children down the path to adulthood, Joellen is kept busy helping others achieve their fitness goals at the “It’s For You” exercise salon in Nappanee. Joellen has also worked in social services and says, “Sometimes the role of social worker comes out, still today.” In fact, Joellen enjoys working with others so much that someday, she’d like to be a counselor, perhaps helping those whose lives have been hurt by alcoholism. With all her duties at work and at home, Joellen still finds time for community involvement. A resident of Milford since she was five, she is president of the Milford Park Board and a member of the Pastor/Parish Committee of the United Methodist Church of Milford. Joellen has attended that church since the age of twelve. 0 Reading, music, and dancing are Joellen’s hobbies, and she feels that finding time for herself is essential to her family and career. “I have to be happy about my own life before I can make my kids or anyone else happy,” Joellen asserts. Joellen Free is a “people person.” When asked how she sees herself, Joellen is sure in her answer. “A person,” she says, “ who cares about people.”
