LUNCH TIME FISHERMAN — Russ England, Pierceton, enjoys a “fishing break” at Waubee Lake while on his lunch hour. He works in the shipping department at Maple Leaf Farms. Fishing is for everyone

Howard Taft, owner of Smokey’s Bait and Tackle, between Syracuse and Wawasee Lakes, is generally aware of when bass, bluegills, crappies and pike are “hitting.” He said that since he is busy seven days a week it is the other guys who are doing all the fishing and who will really know when the fish are biting. Taft added that at his location he sees many fishermen make the run between the lakes, possibly still looking for that “hot spot” where all the fish are. Taft said the bass fishing clubs which hold tournaments on the lakes each summer generally are all outfitted to spend their time fishing so they don’t take much time to stop at his pier unless they just heard of a great artificial bait that is not in their tackle boxes. When asked if there really are big fish in the two lakes, Taft moved to his bulletin board and took down a picture of a pound pike being held aloft by the son of Ken

Ellenberger, who caught the lunker. “This is one of the medium sized ones,” he commented. . f \ < * > Z / v Taft said the great thing about fishing is anyone can do it with very little investment. “Oh sure,” he said, “the big guys have expensive bassboats with monster outboards, little trolling motors on the front and lots of rods and reels, but when you boil it all down, fishing is for everyone.”
