The marina operator said, “With this wind, it would be tough to get a sailboat back to the pier.” On weekends when the weather is calm, the cruisers will be out on the lake in force as sailors and their crews enjoy the beautiful waters of the area lakes. Sails will be flying
“The wind is free” will be heard many ' times this year on Kosciusko County lakes as sailors, experienced and novice alike, enjoy the exhilaration as the wind “grabs” the sails and sends their sailboats slicing silently through the water. Sailboats have become increasingly popular on county lakes. They come in all sizes and models as they fill the summer boating fun of area boaters. On a sunny Saturday or Sunday when a good breeze is blowing, the boat racers will be out in force on Wawasee and Tippecanoe lakes as they pit their skill against skippers in other EScows, Lightnings or catamarans. Probably any time two sailboats are in the same vicinity on any county lake, the thought of a challenge goes through the mind of at least one of the captains. It is rumored that one fellow on Wawasee Lake was heard last year asking his wife to jump overboard to lighten the boat so he could stay ahead of a rival sailor rapidly coming up astern! Wawasee Boating Association provide colorful and entertaining races as they race on a shared course on the big lake. Due to prevailing winds, this is usually on the north end of the lake. The spinnaker runs are especially colorful as these big balooning sails go up as the lightnings turn onto a downwind run. Larry Baumgardt, who operates That Sailboat Place in Syracuse said the E-Scow fleet is gaining more new racing members and will really put on a show this year as the number of boats increases. More sailing cruisers in the 25-foot and longer models are being seen on Wawasee and Tippecanoe lakes each summer. Even people enjoying a powerboat ride or a swim stop to watch as several of these large sailboats, sailing in line, come near a shore and those on board go into a flurry of action as the skippers sing out “ready about” and then ‘hard a-lee” as the helms go over, everyone ducks, the booms swing across the cockpits, sails fill and the boats surge off in another direction.
