New production at Amish Acres

By NEVIN DULABAUM Staff Writer It may have the same name, but the 1988 production of “Plain & Fancy” at Amish Acres in Nappanee will be much different than last years presentation. Jill Stover, special events coordinator and director of the musical, said last year’s show marked the first time in the quarter century of Amish Acres’ existence that the 80-acre historic farm presented theatrical entertainment. She said “Plain & Fancy” is a musical which portrays the customs, morals, dress and language of Amish people. Stover admitted the Amish Acres

Joy Johnson, who sews quilts at Amish Acres, said a quilt like the one she is working on will take anywhere from 350 to 500 hours to complete. Add the time spent to 1754100 needed for materials, and her hourly wage would be approximately 40 cents an hour if she were self-employed. management was a bit apprehensive when the play opened last year, as they hoped the performance would not be offensive to the many Amish who live in Northern Indiana. Once the production opened to the public, though, Stover’s worries were put to rest. Stover said, “The musical is sentimental and romantic and people have really been responsive to it.” Audience reaction to the play was so positive, in fact, that “Plain & Fancy” is scheduled to begin its second season — with several changes — in early June.
