Farmers, Scouts and other citizens are assisted by a conservation officer in planning and implementing conservation projects. ' Officers also engage in special projects such as wildlife surveys and court proceedings,.make public appearance by attending meetings, fairs and sporting events. Conservation officers are responsible for conducting investigations of swimming, boating, auto and other accidents, as well as thefts and vandalism on ahy DNR property. This includes supervising the recovering of drowning victims, as all public lakes are properties of the DNR. Requirements of the job are similar to those of a police officer. Knowledge of all state statues, particularly those pertaining to conservation must be known as well as the DNR regulations, rules and directives. Knowledge must also be known of outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, trapping, boating, snowmobiling and so on.

Conservation Officers are responsible for enforcing laws, regulations and rules dealing with permits and licenses and includes fishing, hunting, trapping, boating and shooting. Conservation officers have special training in first aid, firearms, fire fighting, motorbdats, police administration, swimming and lifesaving, civil defense, wildlife, vegetation and environmental protection, self defense and photography. Officers can also enforce traffic laws on public highways, however it is not a routine practice.
