Dave Anderson, a veteran with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, will often ask youngsters if they have their fishing licenses during his routine patrol. Shown in the photo is Anderson issuing this youngster a Junior Fisherman’s License, that includes her name and age. Anderson noted this often makes the young fishermen feel important.
Conservation Officer Anderson has always liked the outdoors
“I guess I always wanted to, as far back as I can remember.” stated Dave Anderson, 41, North Webster, who is going on his 18th year as an Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Officer, or conservation officer. “I’ve always liked the outdoors.” Anderson, who has lived in the North Webster area all most all his life, applied to be an officer with the Indiana State Police and Conservation Department at the same time. “I received the paperwork for the State Conservation School first, so I went,” noted Anderson. Following academy training he was worked in Porter County. After one year, he transferred to Starke County, and then a year later back to his home county. Anderson has spent the last 16 years enforcing the DNR laws in Kosciusko County. His job as conservation officer is fitting. When he can, Anderson enjoys fishing and hunting, particularly for big game out west and upTiorth. He noted during his big game hunts, he has bagged bear and various types of deer. Also within the past year, he has taken up painting wildlife animals on china for his own enjoyment. Even though he works eight hours per day for six days and then has two days off, it is hard for him to get away from his job. He

noted he often gets calls from persons with questions, complaints and problems, when he is off duty. Anderson will be married for 21 years in September. He and his wife Jenillee have one son, Brett, a senior at Wawasee High School. The Job The duties of a conservation officer are varied but the main duty is to enforce and uphold all federal and state statutes with particular attention to those related to conservation of natural resources A major part of his duties include enforcing the laws, regulations and rules dealing with permits and licenses for hunting, trapping, shooting, boating, snowmobiling, all terrain vehicles, and so on. The conservation officer also enforces criminal and traffic laws on state property. Officers patrol areas by foot, boat, car, ATV, or plane at reservoirs, lakes, rivers, streams, state and federal forests, DNR properties and rural areas. They also assist in emergencies such as floods, storms, tornadoes and forest and grass fires. Public relations is also a part of the department’s work.
