Jim Houston is 'King of Sports'

Athletics play an important role in today’s society. Evident bf this point is North Webster’s International Palace of Sports. The organization, which honors - one athlete each year, brings professional athletes to the small northern Indiana community each summer. It is one way local residents can rub shoulders with the stars from a variety of arenas, without leaving home. This year local residents will meet Jimmy Houston, a professional fisherman. Houston, unlike other enshrined members to the Palace of Sports’ Hall of Fame, will conduct clinics in the community prior to his induction. At the induction ceremony, a portrait and wax figure of Houston will be placed in the museum. All scholarships given through the International Palace of Sports in 1988 will be given in Houston’s name. Past celebrities honored include Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight, Eddie Richenbacher, John Wooden, Dick Weber, Sugar Ray Leonard, Ely Culbertson, Babe Ruth, Red Grange, Gordie Howe, Arnold Palmer, Johnny Weissmuller, Pancho Gonzales, Jesse Owens, Mark Spitz, Babe Zaharias, Pele, O.J. Simpson, Hank Aaron, Archie Griffin, Bruce Jenner, A.J. Foyt, Muhammad Ali, Tom Sneva, Fuzzy Zoeller, Mark Hermann and Wayne Gretzky. With this list of honorees, any sports fan would consider visiting the Palace of Sports athrUl. duced, including exact body measurements, skin tone and facial expressions. However, not all replicas are made from wax. Some of the exhibits in the Palace of Sports are made from wood and fiberglass. The International Palace of Sports was constructed in the mid-1970s with 50,000 individuals attending the dedicating ceremony. The program was conducted during North Webster’s Mermaid Festival. ' Simpson, Weissmuller and Owens were present for the inaugural event. The theme behind the Palace of Sports is obvious — Camelot. Other structures throughout the town carry the same theme, making North Webster an interesting place to visit.
