WARSAW — Elkhart Memorial used six first place finishes Tuesday evening to breeze past Warsaw and Elkhart Central in sectional competition at Warsaw Community High School. The Chargers scored 104 points to outdistance Warsaw and Central, both with 76 points. Three other Northern Lakes Conference teams placed in the top ten, led by the Goshen Redskins. Goshen tallied 30 points for fifth place, while Northridge nipped Wawasee for sixth with 22 points. The Warriors scored 21 for seventh. Although the Warriors finished near the top of the field, only one performer — Lisa Mikel — advanced into next weekends regional meet at Fort Wayne Northrop. Mikel, only a freshman, placed second in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. The top four runners in each event advance to regionals. In the 100, Mikel and Elkhart Memorial’s Cynthia Pratcher

Pratcher finished in 13.1, Mikel, 13.3. The 200-meter dash between the two was riot as close. Pratcher won the race with a 25.9 time while Mikel finished in 27.0 for second. The Wawasee standout edged Elkhart Central’s Angie Andrews, who finished in 27.1 and third place. Krissy Eisenhour finished fifth in the 300-meter low hurdles with a 49.2 time but failed to advance from the Warsaw Sectional. Amy Parr was a sixth-place finisher in the discus, throwing the sphere 97-10. Steff Jamiel jumped 5-2 in the high jump but finished a'disappointing fifth. Wawasee falls again.
SYRACUSE — Wawasee dropped its 12th straight girls’ softball game Tuesday evening as it watched as its 2-0 second-inning lead vanish as Columbia City rallied for a 14-4 victory at Vega Field. The game was played on the new softball diamond at the softball complex. Evelyn Stricklin brought in Wawasee’s first run with her first inning single. Amy Barton scored after being hit by a Gina Slusser pitch. The Warriors scored their second run on four straight walks in the second. But the visiting Eagles plated three runs in the third and put the game away with a six-run fourth. Wawasee could manage just single runs in the third and fifth innings against Slusser. Jennifer Brumbaugh paced Wawasee’s offensive attack with a pair of singles. Cari Glassburn went O-for-1 at the plate but walked three times. In junior varsity action, Columbia City erupted for 16-sixth inning runs to whip the Warriors, 34-18. Pitching proved to be the
for Warsaw’s Angie Johnson. The Tiger took two events — shot put and 800-meter run — to move into regional competition. The 800-meter race was the best contest on the chilly evening. Johnson and Angola’s Lisa Berry ran together for the majority of the race, never more than one stride separating the two in the final lan. At the end, Johnson’s lunge at the tape proved to be the difference. Johnson finished in 2:18.46 with Berry at 2:18.49. In the shot put, Johnson had little competition. She won with a 38-5 ‘ 2 throw, three feet farther than Tracy Derbyshire of Angola. Still, Johnson could not propel the Tigers past Elkhart Memorial. The Crimson Chargers had too much firepower for the rest of the field, winning their third straight sectional title. Johnson was the lone Tiger to win an event. Andrea Halpin added a pair of second places, 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter low hurdles, while Krista Ross was second in the 3,200 run and the Tigers’ 1,600 relay finished in the runner-up position. Hamilton sweeps Warriors Saturday
HAMILTON — Wawasee continued to stumble in its second girls’ softball season as Hamilton recorded a doubleheader sweep over the Warriors, 28-21 and 9-6 Saturday. The double-dip loss dropped Wawasee’s record to 3-13 overall. The Warriors pounded out 16 hits in the first game but 11 errors led to their downfall. The visitors outhit Hamilton in the nightcap, only to drop the heartbreaker. In the opener, Wawasee exploded for 14 runs, its largest output in a single inning in school history. But the double-digit production proved fruitless as Hamilton rallied in the middle innings. The productive inning started when Jennifer Brumbaugh opened the game with a line single to left. The Wawasee catcher stole second and third before scoring on Cari Glassburn’s RBI single. Shelly Bushong added a pair of RBI singles in the inning, her only hits in the game. In all, the Warriors collected eight hits in the scoring bonanza, highlighted by Amy Barton’s bases-clearing triple. The hosts closed Wawasee’s lead to 14-6 after three-run innings in the first and second. The Warriors plated a single run in the fourth, but Hamilton countered with 11. Hamilton’s rally netted the lead for the first time in the game and Wawasee could not catch up. The hosts added five runs in the fifth and six runs in the six to close the door on the Warriors. Still, Wawasee battled to its final out. The Warriors pushed two runs across the plate in the fifth, added three in the sixth, closing the lead to 28-20. But Wawasee could muster just one run in the
Raiders edge Wawasee, 6-0
SYRACUSE - Northridge scored twice in the second inning Monday and the runs proved to be enough as the Raiders shutout Wawasee, 6-0, in a Northern Lakes Conference baseball game. Wawasee played well against the Raiders but just couldn’t generate any offense. The Warriors collected three hits in the
seventh as it dropped the slugfest. Brumbaugh and Glassburn paced the Warriors’ offensive onslaught with three hits apiece. Glassburn collected four RBI in the contest. Brumbaugh had two. Lai Reed, collected a pair of hits and three RBI in the contest, as did Jillene Schmidt. Donna Miller took the pitching loss for Wawasee. In the nightcap, Hamilton scored six times in the opening inning, erasing a 3-0 deficit, and went on to trip the Warriors 9-6. Wawasee added a single run in the third, but the host squad

In other varsity action this past week, Fort Wayne North scored six times in the third inning Saturday to defeat the Warriors, 10-5. Matt Koble and Crouch led the Warriors’ seven-hit attack with a pair of singles each. At Goshen on Thursday, the Redskins had a 4-0 lead after four innings, then held on to trim Wawasee, 5-4.
Plymouth buries Warriors
PLYMOUTH — Wawasee’s Amy Barton limited Plymouth to three hits Monday, but the host Pilgrims scored 22 runs in their 22-2 rout of Wawasee. The loss dropped Wawasee’s mark to 3-13 overall and 0-6 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Plymouth improved its slate to 4-12 and 2-4 in the NLC. It took Plymouth little time to score all the runs it needed to win in the first. The first three Pilgrims reached base on walks to set the stage. After a pair of errors — on one play — brought in two runs, Plymouth used three more walks and another error to plate the final three runs. The Pilgrims increased their margin in the second with a pair of runs. Amy Rudd reached base on an error with one out and she scored on Bobi Weston’s double.

Wawasee scored three times in the fifth inning to close the Redskins’ lead to one, 4-3. But the hosts scored what turned out to be the game-winner in its fifth. The Warriors closed within 5-4 in the six on a O’Haver double and RBI single by Coy, but could get no closer. Mike VanDiepenbos went the distance for Wawasee and suffered the tough loss. Wawasee will travel to Bremen Wednesday and Elkhart Memorial Saturday.
Tracy Davis reached base on an error and Rudd scored when the Warriors* outfield committed another error on the play. After Plymouth tallied once in the fourth, Wawasee countered with its only runs of the game. Barton walked opening the inning and later stole second. After Cari Glassburn and Stacey Lent walked to fill the sacks with Warriors, Barton scored on Shelly Bushong’s bounce out to shortstop. Jillene Schmidt brought in the Warriors’ final run with a sharp single up the middle. The game was finally called in the fifth inning because of the 10-runrule. Wawasee’s next action will be Friday afternoon against Whitko. It will be the Warriors’ final home game of the season.
