Depth keys Manchester win

GOSHEN — Depth was key for Manchester at the 46th-annual Goshen Relays Saturday. The Squires rode the excellent performance of sophomore John Bazzoni in the field events and three victories in running events to edge Northern Lakes Conference member Plymouth, 75-74, for the small school championship. Gary Roosevelt, to no one’s surprise, walked away with the Class A championship. Gary scored 115 points, while Fort Wayne Snider was second with its 76 total. Twenty-five schools competed in Class B, 16 in Class A. Wawasee, which scored 32 points, finished 14th in Class B. The Warriors picked up two first places to account for their scoring. The Warriors’ Mike Meek, Basil Bonner, Dan McCulloch and Greg Lehman battled the cold weather conditions before winning the sprint relay third heat. Wawasee finished in 45.02 to defeat Whitko’s 46.89 time. Wawasee’s final victory came in the 800-meter relay. In the third race of the day, Wawasee’s Meek, Scott Carlin, Bonner and McCulloch finished in 1:35.87 to edge Norwell’s 1:37.22 clocking. Meek added a sixth place finish in the 100-meter dash. In the first race of the 300-meter hurdles, Don Deter placed fifth for Wawasee. The Warriors were fourth in the sprint medley relay and fourth in the 3,200-meter relay. No Wawasee member placed in the field events. Bazzoni paced the Squires’ winning effort by setting the Goshen Relay’s Class B record in the pole vault. Warriors runs past CC

COLUMBIA CITY - Wawasee rode the efforts of two double winners Thursday to defeat Columbia City, 79-48, in a boys’ high school track meet. Steve Eastman and Greg Lehman turned in the pair of victories in the scheduled home meet, eventually moved to Columbia City. Eastman took the 800-meter run and 1,600-meter run for the Warriors. In the 800, Eastman finished in 2:07 to edge teammate Coung Reed. Don Riffle was third for Wawasee. The 1,600-meter victory was just as impressive for the Warrior. Eastman finished in 4:46 to edge Jason Douglas and Jeff Carey. Lehman, meanwhile, won the 100 and 200 dashes. Lehman’s 11.5 time in the 100 moved him past Mike Meek. Lehman went 23.5 in the 200 for the victory. Wawasee took the 400-meter relay as Scott Carlin, Basil Bonner, Dan McCulloch and Lehman

ing North Wood’s Brett Grove’s 14-BV2 mark set in 1982. Bazzoni scored 17 points for Manchester with his third in the high jump and sixth place in the long jump. Other Manchester victories included Brent Stanley’s 300-meter hurdles triumph (40.03); sprint medley relay (1:40.06); and 3,200-meter relay (8:33.53). Plymouth had an opportunity to win the meet, but misfortune spoiled the Pilgrims’ effort. Pete Bieghler, looking for his third straight 1,600 crown, finished second. He was slowed by a knee injury, which he has nursed for several weeks. New Prairie’s Dave DeNeve won the event, five seconds ahead of the Plymouth standout. For Wawasee, the Warriors turned in good performances but fell short in the standings. Wawasee snaps skid, tame Tigers

SYRACUSE — Streaks are made to be broken. Wawasee snapped its six-game losing skid Monday as Rodney Coy scattered\two hits in leading the Warriorsjjast Warsaw, 2-1, in a key Northern Lakes Conference baseball game. After opening the season with three straight wins, the Warriors fell on hard times — losing six straight. Solid pitching and defense were the keys to Monday’s win over arch-rival Warsaw. “This was a big win for us, it should give our guys more confidence,” said Wawasee head coach Neal Frantz. “We got some great pitching and solid defense. We made the plays that were needed to win.” Coy was sensational in picking up his second win of the season. The southpaw limited the Tigers to two second-inning singles, one which produced their only run. Meanwhile, Wawasee threatened throughout the contest but could only score twice. In the first, Fred Crouch opened the game with a single. A sacrifice and wild pitch later, Crouch waited to score from third. Jay Koontz delivered, scoring Crouch, with a bounce out.

Warsaw countered in the second with its only run and hits in the game. Steve Kordesh walked with one out and moved to third on Paul Wiley’s single to right. Jamie Phillips plated the Tigers’ only run with a line single to center. Coy got out of the jam without further damage when the Warriors turned a double play. The twin-killing eventually killed the Tigers. Wawasee threatened in the third, moving a runner to third with two out, but could not score. Matt Koble singled with one out and promptly stole second. A fielder’s choice moved the Wawasee shortstop to third before Jay Koontz ended the inning with a long fly out to center. Neither team seriously threatened until the sixth. Dan O’Haver opened the Wawasee sixth with a line double down the left field line. Koontz, on a one-strike pitch, sharply singled to center bringing in O’Haver with the game-winning run. Wawasee’s run held up, but not before the Tigers seriously threatened in their final plate appearance. Don Jones opened the Tigers’ seventh with a walk. Craig Courtney was inserted to run for Jones, and Warsaw’s fast runner advanced to third on consecutive wild pitches. Frantz ordered his infield to play in — on the grass — and the strategy paid off for the Warriors. Kordesh bounced to Koontz at second, keeping Courtney at third with one out. After Wiley walked, Phillips bounced a high roller to Koble. Speedway Feature NEW PARIS - A quartet of Syracuse drivers are expected Saturday, April 30, at the New Paris Speedway. Warriors 'steal' game from Chargers

SYRACUSE — Wawasee evened its record at 3-3 Thursday with a come-from- behind 8-7 girls’ softball victory over Elkhart Memorial. Wawasee jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning but had to fight in the closing innings for the victory. Both teams traded runs in the second, third and fourth innings before the Chargers took their first lead. Trailing 6-4 in the fifth, Elkhart Memorial pushed three runs across the plate to capture the lead. The game remained that way until Wawasee rallied in the sixth. Wawasee’s speed was the key to the comeback win. Cari Glassburn reached base in the sixth and promptly stole second. One pitch later Glassburn stole third as the ball sailed into left field. The Warrior speedster easily raced home with the game-tying run.

The slick-fielding shortstop caught Courtney off third for the second out and Coy induced Jeff Fitzgerald to bounce out ending the game. Neither team could generate much offense in the game. The Warriors collected four hits, two in the sixth inning. Warsaw, meanwhile, managed two singles off Coy. The Wawasee hurler walked four and struck out two in going the distance. Warsaw’s Brad Szymanowski walked two Warriors and fanned eight in six innings of work. The Warriors return to Northern Lakes Conference action Thursday when they host Goshen. The game will mark the first time that Scott Siler will coach against his former team. Siler is an assistant coach with the Redskins. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Trojans win MILFORD — Milford’s seventh and eighth grade boys’ track team used a balance effort to whip Fairfield, 58-38, Wednesday, April 20. Nine Milford athletes figured in the scoring. Kyle Newcomer and Shane Deter lead the way with three first places and one third. Ryan Keiper added three victories to the Trojans’ cause. Other seventh grade scorers include Spencer Long, Jorge Castro, Toby Edmonds, Brad Beer, Jason Buck and Bryon Kaufman. The Trojans’ eighth grade boys’ squad fell to Fairfield, 61-41. Junior Cantu was the top Milford scorer with three victories. Kirk Dewart and Mason Robbins tied with seven points each. Shawn Mast added a first place in the discus. Arie Dewees, Tim Bradley and Michael Wright also placed for Milford. In Milford girls’ track results, the Trojans won nine of the 12 events to whip Fairfield, 78-22, Wednesday. Scoring for the Trojans were: Mel Hobbs; Wendy West; Trisha Hostetler; Yencia Cruz; Tiffany Hainge; Kerri Speicher; Teresa Wuthrich; Betsy Henderson; Shanda Bushong; Rita Beer; Jill Williams; Mindy Beatly; and ZalenaAugalin.

Amy Barton, then doubled, putting the game-winning run in scoring position. A delayed steal by the Warrior brought in the winning run as the ball — like with Glassburn — went into left field. Michelle Coy, who picked up her third win of the season, retired the Chargers in order in

Tigers whip Goshen, Wawasee

GOSHEN — Warsaw took nine first place events Monday en route to an easy triangular meet victory over Goshen and Wawasee at Goshen’s Foreman Field. The Tigfers scored 70 points to walk away with the crown. Goshen scored 44 points to narrowly defeat Wawasee, which finished with 34 points. In placing third, Wawasee gained three first places —two by freshman Lisa Mikel. The talented runner won the 100 and 200 dashes in impressive style. Mikel was the Warriors’ first winner, taking the 100 in 12.9. She squeaked out the win over Goshen’s Jenny Drolet and Kerry Vanderßeyden. In the 200, Mikel edged Drolet with her 27.3 clocking. Amy Parr was the only other Warrior winning an event in the conference meet. Parr threw the discus 94-9% for the victory. Julie Gunn and Krissy Eisenhour added a second place efforts to the Wawasee total. Gunn was runner-up in the high jump, while Eisenhour finished second in the 300 hurdles. In junior varsity competition, Gunn was the lone Wawasee winner. The Warrior took the long jump with a 14-0 leap. Others placing in the top two were Dawn Firestone, second in the high jump, Wawasee’s 400 relay and . Michelle Katsanis, second in the 800 run.
