Warriors second in Monument Relays

ANGOLA — Wawasee’s boys’ track team set a new Monument City Relays record Saturday, but the Warriors still fell short in the standings, falling to Angola by 30 points. Angola took team honors with a 138 score, followed closely by the Warriors’ 108 total. Fort Wayne Carroll was third with 88 points, while Woodlan, Mount Piler, Prairie Heights, Garrett and Leo rounded out the field. Coy, Brumbaugh lead Warriors to split

GARRETT — -Wawasee, behind Michelle Coy’s pitching and Jennifer Brumbaugh’s extra base hitting, edged Garrett, 12-10, in the first of two high school girls’ softball games Saturday. In the nightcap, the hosts steamrolled past the Warriors, 13-2, to gain a split. Brumbaugh registered four hits in the pair of games, three being doubles. Stacey Lent, Amy Barton and Brumbaugh each stole twobases for Wawasee. The Warriors, didn’t have the same fortune Thursday against Rochester. SYRACUSE — Concord broke open a tight Northern Lakes Conference boys’ baseball game with six runs in the sixth inning to hand Wawasee its second straight loss, 8-5, Monday. The Minutemen, 5-2 and 1-0 in conference play, sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth before the Warriors could end the rally. Troy Barber’s two-run single gave Concord a 4-1 lead before Jeff Downing capped the inning With a three-run homer. The blast off Wawasee’s Mike Van Diepenbos proved to be the winning margin. Coburn scattered three hits in four innings of work on the mound for the Warriors. Brent Zartman relieved Coburn in the fifth and surrendered the Blue Blazers’ only run. Besides pitching the Warriors to the win, Coburn added three hits, including a double. Jeremy Ott singled three times in Wawasee’s 14-hit attack, and Cotton had a double and triple. Matt Ringler and Schwab both doubled for the Warriors. The pair of wins raised Wawasee’s record to 2-0 entering Thursday’s non-conference game with Penn.

Jones moving to Fairfield

SYRACUSE — Jim Jones, Wawasee’s assistant football coach the past six years, was named head football and wrestling coach at Fairfield High School Thursday, April 14. Fairfield’s administration approved the appointment at its monthly board meeting. Jones has nine years of coaching and teaching experience since graduating from Ball State University in 1979. He will teach junior high industrial technology and high school drafting. JIM I Kj|||l JONES The former Goshen High School star began his coaching career at River Forest High School in 1979. He moved to Decatur, 111. two years later and Wawasee in 1982. At Wawasee, Jones served under Myron Dickerson as defensive coordinator. During his tenure, Wawasee fielded several sound defensive teams, including the 1985 state runner-up squad.

BREMEN — Wawasee remained perfect in the girls’ tennis season Tuesday when it edged Bremen, 3-2, in a key Northern Lakes Conference match. The win raised the Warriors’ season mark to 4-0 and 1-0 in the NLC. Nicole Neff and Marci Wright were key ingredients in the conference win. The pairof Warriors easily turned back their Bremen opponents to give Wawasee the early momentum. Neff bested Christy Koontz, 6-1, 6-4, to take the number one singles position. Wright followed the Warriors’ leader and posted a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Sarah Foster. Melia Dell gave Bremen some life as she edged Heather Keiper, 6-1, 6-3. The Lions needed to take the following two doubles position to upset Wawasee. It did not happen. After Missy Jones and Susan Moran defeated Lora Hollar and Kim Carmichael 6-2, 6-4 to even the score, Wawasee’s second doubles team gave the visitors the win. With the move to Fairfield, Jones is expected to carry many of the same philosophies taught at Wawasee. The Warriors have a “ fundamental approach to the game and the same style should appear at Fairfield. The former Wawasee coach becomes the fourth coach at Fairfield since the sport was adopted in 1969. Bill Putori was the first coach with the Falcons. Fairfield failed to win a game last year and have registered a dismal 1-16 slate the past two seasons. Jones realizes the uphill < challenge awaiting him, but looks forward to the opportunity.
