Chamber backs park plan

I By DEB PATTERSON Staff Writer

A proposed action plan for the Syracuse Park and Recreation Department was presented at the monthly meeting of the SyracuseWawasee Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors this morning (Wednesday). Kip Schumm, park board vice president, noted funds for the five-year plan would be sought through federal grants, donations and local tax appropriations. The total cost for the proposed plans is $518,500. Highlighting some of the plans, Schumm pointed out the establishment of “Friends of the Park,” “Music in the Parks,” employment of a part-time program director, determine development feasibility of the B'z acres behind Calvary United Methodist Church, potential land acquisition for parking at Lakeside Park, acquisition of 30-40 acres for a new park. A number of other projects are included in the five-year master plan. currently reviewing the plan before a presentation is made to the Syracuse Town Board. The chamber board gave the plan unanimous approval and agreed with Schumm’s statement “we will lose support if we don’t accomplish the suggestions we have.” Other Business Ernie Rogers, board member, suggested the chamber look into requesting another stoplight at the intersection of Chicago Street and Huntington Street. He noted there have been a lot of fender benders at this busy intersection, thus far. The board voted to send a letter of recommendation to the town board to look into this before someone is seriously injured. Bill Beemer reported he has received the results of the park department survey which will be utilized in the chamber’s beautification project. High on the list of comments was the image of the community and the SR 13 corridor. During Beemer’s report on the Hoosier Celebration ’BB, set for July Fourth weekend, he will be making a plea to all local groups to contact him if they would like to sponsor an ice cream social, participate in the music in the park or other activities. Beemer will be coordinating the activities. A new policy was established by the board following a request from CTB, Inc., Milford. The policy will be if a company wants endorsement from the chamber,

it must become a member first. The Milford manufacturer requested the chamber to write a certificate of origin for the company as they will be doing work for India. The certificate will only be recognized if on a chamber of commerce letterhead. The request was made as Milford has no chamber. The chamber golf outing will be planned for September and possibly on a Thursday. Rogers will be looking into the date. A search to replace Jeanne Gardiner on the board of directors is underway as her term is one of the three up in 1988. Mrs. Gardiner, who is president, Will
