North Webster UMW keep busy raising funds for missionaries

I By GLEN LONG Staff Writer Members of United Methodist Women (UMW) at North Webster United Methodist Church are part of a larger organization which includes thousands of United Methodist Women's groups. This group of energetic ladies has a full agenda of projects scheduled each year to raise money to support its mission commitments. Carlyn Cox, president of North Webster UMW, said the purpose of the organization, with headResurrection day at the Milford Christian Church The members, friends and visitors of Milford Christian Church celebrated the Resurrection of Jesus with much joy and praise on Easter Sunday. The Easter sunrise service, led by the youth of the church, was a very inspirational time for all worshippers. A slide and music drama by Tim Stiffler made the scenes of the Resurrection very personal and very real. Special music was provided by Denise, Darcy and Linda Replogle and the Resurrection message was given by Brian Wilcox, youth minister. Dave Benning and his faithful crew served Easter breakfast to many worshippers, including members and visitors. The Bible classes of all ages presented “The Resurrection” to every student. The problems that many people have concerning the Resurrection were discussed. All in attendance had a deeper faith and hope in the Resurrection at the end of the class period. The sanctuary was decorated with a giant Easter lily cross which filled the auditorium with its beauty and fragrance. Special music was presented by Peg Custer and Kristen Clark. Kristen is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Kuhns. ‘.‘The Blessing of the Resurrection” was the message of the hour. A special “Thirty Pieces of Silver” offering was received for Christ and His church.

quarters in New York city, is stated: “The organized unit of United. Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose isHo know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.” The North Webster UMW is one of 60 churches in the Elkhart District which is in the Northern Conference of UMW. The conferences are all joined together to create the national United Methodist Women’s organization. Five smaller groups known as circles make up the local UMW, which at present has 139 members. These are named Esther Circle, Lydia Circle, Miriam Circle, Rebekah Circle and Naomi Circle. Each circle meets once a month in a member’s home and there is also a general UMW meeting at the church monthly which will have a special speaker or other informative program related to missions. Many times the speaker will be either a retired missionary or one who is in the United Stated on furlough from overseas service. The UMW organization had its beginnings in ladies aid societies, foreign missions groups and home missions groups in United Methodist Churches across the country in earlier years. In 1940 all these groups joined together to become Woman’s Society of Christian Service. Then in 1968 the organization became the present United Methodist Women. In order to raise money to help support its $5,800 annual missions budget, the local UMW members work tirelessly on their many money making projects. They have sold napkins, necklaces and for several years have canned all kinds of pickles and sold them in cans from pint size to gallons. In May, under the direction of Letha Koher, church kitchen manager, the members will be cooking chicken and making noodles to be sold at the annual Mermaid Festival Parade. In the fall their annual project will again be to make and sell mincemeat.

PLANNING PROJECTS FOR UMW — Seated in the library of the United Methodist Church in North Webster are member of the local United Methodist Women’s group. They are planning their summer projects to earn money to support their missions program.

Other outreach projects include collecting postage stamps, Campbell soup labels, Betty Crocker coupons, eyeglasses to be sent to third world countries and used hearing aid batteries. It isn’t all work for the ladies as they will have their annual Mother/Daughter Dinner in May and their annual June breakfast. Since about half of the members are in warmer climates in December, the UMW has an annual Christmas in July celebration so the members can fellowship together. In August the UMW is involved in a special church worship where members of the church 85 and older are honored. They also have a tea in September to remember and honor deceased members. A ; freewill offering will be taken to benefit two-year-old Amy Endsley of Ligonier. Since she was four months old, Amy has suffered from a rare ' ’ intractable seizure disorder which causes involuntary, often serious jerking motions and other problems; up to 100 seizures can occur in a day. Amy has been hospitalized more than 50 times. Her family’s insurance has been exhausted and Amy’s mother, who is a single parent, is unable to work due the constant care and attention Amy requires. Existing hospital bills are enormous and further testing and possible surgery may be in the future. Talent for the April 16 concert will include “Surrender” of the Nappanee-Wakarusa area; Don Rohrer, minister of music for the Nappanee Missionary Church, joined by his wife Donna; and the Gospel Four of Middlebury. All are invited to support a worthy cause and to enjoy an evening of gospel music. The Nappanee Missionary - Church is located one mile north of Nappanee on SR 19. Doors will open at 6:15.

Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. -i 1 Matthew 22:36-40
