Lancers fall from NAIA

KANSAS CITY - Grace’s dream season came to a halt Friday when Auburn-Montgomery broke the Lancers’ bubble in second round action in the NAIA national tournament. The Senators, seeded fourth in the field, held off Grace 77-66 to advance in the tourney. The Lancers closed the season with an impressive 31-5 record, second best in school history. Auburn-Montgomery fell to Grand Canyon College in overtime, 88-86, in the championship game Tuesday.

Bowlers hold meeting; elect new officers

SYRACUSE - The Lakeland Women’s Bowling Association held a business meeting at Gropp’s Fish of Stroh Monday, March 21. Highlighting the meeting was a new LWBA bylaw adopted by the membership committee. The action admendment was not released. Rosemary Gerrity reported that 294 bowlers participated in the BVL tournament held recently. The tournament earned $220.00 and will be used for recreational materials for hospitalized veterans. Officers for the upcoming season were elected at the meeting with Sharon Gilbert being named first vice-president. Judy Miller was elected secretary-treasurer and Monica Lambright will assume the office of sargeant-at-arms. Miller was also elected as a delegate to the national convention in Bismark, N.D.. Kathryn Knisley will serve as a replacement for Miller. Gilbert and Miller will represent the organization at the state convention in Terre Haute. Trophies were presented to the

Ask Dr. Bowling By Chuck Pezzano Questions, questions, questions??? Here are some, with answers that may well lead to more questions. - \ Question—What’s more difficult, a 300 game in bowling or a hole-in-one in golf? Answer—No contest, a 300 game. A hole-in-one requires a single stroke. A 300 game calls for 12 strikes. One lucky stroke comes much more often than 12 lucky strikes, and 12 skillful strikes are harder to come by than a single skillful stroke. Q — Are there ways to convert the 7-10 split? A.—Sure. Leading the list is luck. Then comes lying. Some years ago Katsuhiko Okazaki left the monster split. The Japanese bowler rolled his second ball and just as it neared the pins an earthquake struck, and both pins tumbled down. This method is not recommended. Okazaki never got a patch for his feat. Nobody stayed around to verify it. Q.—What makes a good spare bowler? A.—A good strike bowler. There is no such thing as an easy spare. Keep leaving two or more pins and you’ll miss your share, regardless of average. Q— Is it really true that most pro bowlers own and use many bowling balls? A.—Most pros feel deprived unless they have a pair of double ball bowling bags full and ready for action, with another half dozen bowling balls in reserve in the car. Some would use a different ball for each lane if they could carry them all. A genius is now working on a bag to carry four .bowling balls. It comes complete with hernia care instruction. Q.—How do you prepare for a big tournament? A —lt shouldn’t be a matter of a big or small tournament or any other kind of competition. Gear every shot in every game as though it was the most important ever and you won’t have a worry about preparing, you always will be prepared. Q.—How do you break a slump? A.—The best way is to imagine it is someone else in the slump, not you. Every bowler knows how to cure another bowler’s problems. Q.—My husband is a bowler, but I’m not. He is having some of his bowling friends over. How do I entertain them? A. —Honest, to entertain any bowler, all you have to do is sit and listen. Q. —I’m just starting in bowling, do you think I have a chance to win a trophy? A.—You have an overwhelming opportunity to win something sometime. The list of awards given by various groups, leagues, associations, and other donors, local and national, covers almost everything from breathing to surviving. Q.—l’m 81, am I too old to bowl? A.—ln bowling, old is always 10 years older than you are, and too old doesn’t exist. Q.—l read in the newspaper about a cat that bowls. Is that possible? A.—Why not? In the past there have been bowling horses, dogs, birds,, chimps and dolphins. But, though they can bowl, not a dam one of them knows how to keep score.

Against Grace, Auburn never trailed. The Senators built a 33-28 halftime lead then held off the pesky Lancers in the final half. Tylor Coley scored 22 points to lead Grace’s attack while Paul Zeltwanger scored 18,15 in the second half. Ben Teske closed his college career with 12 markers and Brooks Koble finished with two. The former Wawasee player scored 27 points in Grace’s opening round victory Thursday against Paul Quinn of Waco, Texas.

Landmark bowling prize

ByJIMDRESSEL It was a landmark win for Darryl len when he picked up the $250,000 first prize in the Lucky Strike Filters Bowling Classic at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas. “At some point, I want to be known as a good bowler instead of a good black bowler,” said len (pronounced eye’-on), who became the first black to win one of bowling’s megabuck events. len won his big prize, as well as his place in bowling history, by downing third seeded Dennis Samsel of Colorado Springs, Colo., 259-224. It came moments after len suffered his first loss in the double elimination event to Samsel, 257-179. Samsel, who has pro aspirations, won SIOO,OOO for finishing second. len, an electrician from Brooklyn, N.Y., wants no part of the tour. He once did, having dreamt of becoming the first black bowler to win a tour title. That changed when George Branham 111 won the *B6 Brunswick Memorial World Open. He decided to stick with the lucrative megabuck tour. “Maybe when I’m 35, I might bowl on the pro tour parttime,” said len, who’s 26, “but right now there’s just too much money on the amateur tour.” Spoken like a

true winner of a quarter of a million dollars. HERE AND THERE - Heading into the home stretch of the men’s pro tour, the Bowler of the Year races are tighter than they’ve ever been in the history of the honor. The women’s tour events are now over, and three women bowlers — Betty Morris, Leanne Barrette and Lisa Wagner — stand at the top of the class with three victories each. Meanwhile, nobody has won more than two titles on the men’s tour. In fact, the year’s leading money winner, Pete Weber, has won only once! Number two money earner, Del Ballard Jr., just won the Brunswick Memorial World Open for his second 1987 title, joining a group of two-timers that also includes Walter Ray Williams, Jr., Randy Pedersen, Brian Voss, Kent Wagner, Scott Devers and Mark Roth. Anybody for a coin flip? ...

The YABA World, which carries news of youth activities and those of the Young American Bowling Alliance, is now appearing as a newspaper and is available free of charge over the counter at most bowling centers around the country . . . George Tignor of Gardner, Mass., won the $40,000 first prize in the first Atlantic City High Roller. Mike Luchstein, son of tour staffer Larry Lichs-

Semiz downed New Yorker Jerry Smith, 222-182, in the title match, and the win came on the heels of his victory in the Ebonite Senior Championship in Canton two months earlier . . . Bowler Bill Tucker, TV announcer Chris Schenkel and publisher Mort Luby Jr. were elected to the American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame. Tucker was a Veterans category honoree, and Schenkel and Luby were recognized as Meritorious Service honorees ...
