When am I 'Free' of my parents?
DEAR PASTOR BROTHERS: I am 16 and having real trouble with my parents. I’m about to just take off and leave. Doesn’t the law say that when we kids are 16 we are free of parental control? - SIGNED GENA. DEAR GENA: Your question is one that I am asked frequently. The attitude that many of today’s teens have is “If it gets tough at home, I’ll run.” That is a popular attitude today for sure. But it is also a very costly one! Let me attempt to answer your question with a couple of questions. One, which “law” are we talking about? I know jzou are referring to the laws of our legal system, but what about God’s law? Under man’s law, “yes” you might be “free” to tell your parents off and “split.” But it’s

not O.K. with God. God’s requirement to honor your parents doesn’t end when you turn 16. Secondly, what will your attitude about your question be twenty years from now when it’s your daughter who’s asking it? Think long and hard about this one Gena. One of the first girls we ever dealt with here at Freedom Village was a runaway. According to her, she “hated” her parents. Years of fighting and rebelling led her to run away five times. She even had some fun the first four times. The fifth time however turned into a nightmare. She was kept all night and raped repeatedly by two men, and was beaten and abused horribly. The nearly destroyed little girl who was brought to me by her pastor was far from free. As a result of that night, she contracted
venereal disease. The nightmares came in living color night after night and the mental torture she endured was horrible. I’m glad to tell you that she was one of the very fortunate ones. God really worked a miracle in her life. She completed the Freedom Village program, graduated from high school, was reunited with those “awful” parents (who really loved her all along) and is today married to a fine young man. Gena, think twice before you run and be very careful about which “law” you listen to. Fletcher A. Brothers is the Founder/Director of Freedom Village, USA, a home for troubled young people. USING FLOSS Dental floss, if properly used, can play an important role in maintaining oral health. Floss should be of good quality — strong enough so it will not break and lodge between the teeth. The technique for using floss is straightforward. Break off a long piece; from 25 to 28 inches allows enough to wind one end around the middle finger of each hand, use your thumbs to guide the center section of the floss between the teeth, then up or down to the gumline, then back and forth against the sides of the adjacent teeth. Be sure to guide the floss so it cleans the front and back surfaces of each tooth. Floss is the best way to dislodge and remove food part icles and plaque, short of a professional cleaning. One note of caution: avoid flapping the floss against gums while it is in motion. The force can cut gums and make them bleed. If you still can’t quite get the hang of flossing, don’t despair: ask for a demonstration during your next office visit. Presented As A Community Sendee By: George C. Smith D.D.S. Jet engine parts left dirt WASHINGTON - The Navy is checking repair records on 300 jet engines after discovering that an error-prone mechanic was leaving critical parts out of gearboxes, a spokesman said. “Since August 1986, there have been four incidents of engine seizures due to an incorrectly assembled gearbox on the J-532” jet engine that is used on several Navy planes, said Navy spokesman Lt. Ken Ross.
