but it could catapult them further in the tournament. Wawasee had a good basketball team this year. Next year it could be even better. Wednesday’s run to the sectional title appeared to be in step for the Warriors. They played excellent basketball in 1988, appearing to have peaked at the right time. Mark My Words MARK WEINSTEIN In the sectional contest, Wawasee outplayed the Tigers for three quarters. In fact, the Warriors had Warsaw by its tale in the third period — on the verge of an opening round win — only to lose grip and the game. But to elder Wawasee basketball fans, the outcome was nothing new. The Tigers have enjoyed great success with Wawasee in recent years. Quite honestly, Warsaw dominates when the two teams tangle on the hardwood. They didn’t in Bourbon, but still won. That’s what made the loss so hard to swallow. Wawasee played exceptional basketball — until the four minute fourth-period lapse — and still came up short. It is one of the few times that an effective game plan hasn’t worked. Gary Goshert and the Warrior coaches did an excellent job preparing the Warriors — the players just ran out of gas a mile from the filling station. For Wawasee fans, there’s always next year. The statement gets old and tough to accept — year after year — but what else can we say? The Warriors have enjoyed two successful basketball campaigns, there’s no reason under Goshert’s reign the third won’t be the charm. □ The high school basketball season is getting shorter as teams fall out of post-season action. Just three weeks from now Indiana will claim a new state basketball champion! Games on tap this week include Tippecanoe Valley against Concord, East Noble faces Bremen and the two winners meet for the Elkhart Regional championship. Other games are Manchester against Bishop Dwenger,
