Warsaw explodes past Wawasee
BOURBON — Warsaw exploded for 29 fourth-quarter points last Wednesday lifting the Tigers past Wawasee, 61-50, in the opening game of the Triton Sectional. Triton, however, spoiled the Tigers’ party one evening later when it upended Warsaw, 70-66. In other tournament games, Tippecanoe Valley slipped past Rochester before whipping the Trojans in the sectional championship. Although Wawasee dropped the 11-point decision, the contest was much closer than the score indicated. In fact, moving into the final quarter, Wawasee held a 36-32 advantage and the momentum. But the complexion of the game changed in a hurry. After building a 40-34 lead midway through the final period, the Warriors collapsed. In a 4:28 stretch, Warsaw erased its sixpoint deficit and built a nine-point advantage, 51-42, by outscoring the Warriors 17-2. The Warriors could never recover. Warsaw took care of* the basketball in the waning minutes and hit free throws to starve any potential Wawasee rally. The Tigers connected on 18 of 20 free throws in the final period. “We followed our game plan and did pretty much what we wanted to do defensively —for all but four minutes in the fourth quarter,” said a dejected Wawasee coach Gary Goshert. “During that stretch we just didn’t do the fundamental things that you have to do in order to win. It’s really tough to execute what you want to do for so long and then get beat.” In the opposing lockerroom, Warsaw’s Al Rhodes spoke fondly of the Warriors. “It was a super effort by Wawasee,” said the veteran Tiger coach. “Except for a brief period, Wawasee was taking away what we wanted to do. You have to give them a lot of credit.” Still, the bottom line was a Tiger win. “I thought we got great efforts from everyone,” elaborated Rhodes. “Our first eight players really came in and contributed in a positive way. It was a total team effort, we showed a lot of poise during the game. ’ ’ The game was close until the fatal fourth period. Wawasee took a 12-10 advantage after one period as Basil Bonner and Darin Atwood hit key field goals in the frame. “I was a little surprised that we couldn’t score, especially in the fourth quarter stretch,” insisted Goshert. “We just didn’t execute, it’s that simple. I didn’t think we would have trouble scoring points against them.” The Tigers reclaimed the lead after two periods, but Wawasee stormed out of the half to take charge of the contest. Atwood and John Fradure were key in the momentum-changing period as the Warriors built a comfortable lead.

Atwood scored nine of his game-high 16 points in the frame but he also grabbed four rebounds and dished out one assist. Erasure controlled the boards in the period, cleaning the glass five times. The senior finished with 10 rebounds. Besides a strong performance from Atwood and Erasure, Bonner scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and played solid defense. Matt Dick and Matt Koble each scored five points, while Brian Rensberger closed his high school career with four markers. Triton Sectional Warsaw (61) FG FT TP Anderson 2-8 2-2 6
