Community corner Brian Carnahan enjoys his new life in the Lakeland community
IBy NEVIN DULABAUM Staff Writer Brian Carnahan, 26, first became interested in his profession when he was a high school junior. Because of an English composition assignment, Carnahan wrote a paper related to the funeral directing business. During his senior year he participated in ICE, a work/study program which enabled him to work at a funeral home while still attending classes. Carnahan, who moved to Milford with his family last August, is cofuneral director of Mishler’s Funeral Home with Wade Mishler. Carnahan said the English composition paper really interested him in the possibility of pursuing a career as a funeral director. His work/study verified that possibility. Profile During the summer between high school and college, Carnahan took advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity, as he served as a teen missionary in Israel. Although he was busy working at a North Jerusalem orphanage during the weeks he was there, he was able to spend his weekends and his final week in Israel traveling. He calls the experience the best time of his life. Carnahan returned and graduated with a business administration degree from Huntington College in 1981. He then completed a two-year

associate of arts degree in mortuary science at the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1983. All Mortuary Science degrees require a one year apprenticeship at a funeral home, and so he returned to Huntington, completed his apprenticeship, and then stayed at the same business until last summer. After spending nearly four years in Huntington, Carnahan was ready for a change. He believes that relocating to Milford was a very logical career move. “It (working at Mishler’s) is an opportunity for a future. Whereas Huntington was only a temporary stop, Milford is a town where I would want to stay. ’ ’ Carnahan said that he really enjoys his job, and sees it as an opportunity to serve others. He also believes that the occupation receives a bum rap, primarily from television. “Funeral directors always seem to be presented as a dull uncaring person. I like to think that I am a caring person,” he said, “and that I am able to relate to people in a family during the loss of a family member. ’ ’ He continued, saying that it is his philosophy to give the best personalized service possible. That includes meeting with family members, and then supervising all of the necessary arrangements which need to be made. One way which his job in Milford differs from the one he had in Huntington is that his wife, Roberta, is able to assist him at Mishler’s. With him on call nearly all of the time, he living next door to Mishler’s and being able to work together with his wife. When the Carnahan family has free time away from the business, Roberta works with crafts, such as sewing knitting, and woodworking. Brian is a member of the Milford Kiwanis Club, and they both attend the First Brethren Church, where Brian sings in the church choir. They are also kept quite busy by their two children; Bobby, four, and Maggie, eight months.
