Wawasee 11th; Keener 3rd at state

INDIANAPOLIS — Saturday’s boys’ state swim finals had a northern Indiana flavor at the IUIndianapolis Natatorium. Several Northern Lakes Conference swimmers tasted the high-level competition with the end result being satisfying. Wawasee proved to be the strongest among NLC teams, scoring 47 points for an 11th place finish. Warsaw, co-NLC champions with Wawasee, finished a stroke behind the Warriors (12th) with a 46.5 score. Anderson took team honors with 212 points, edging Kokomo’s 205. Munster placed third with a 143 score, while Lake Central was fourth (128) and Carmel finished fifth (125). Northern Lakes Conference member Goshen scored 13 points for 36th position and Concord tallied three points for 48th place. Fiftyjseven teams scored in the stateftieet. Wawasee’s David Keener came closest to winning a state title from the Northern Lakes Conference contingent. The junior scored 435 points in one meter diving for third place. Brownsburg’s Chris Unruh won the title with a 440 score. Goshen’s Jason Pyles scored 362.05 for sixth place in the competition. Other Warriors finishing high in the competition included senior Brad Smith and 400 freestyle relay team. Smith raced 22.0 in the 50 freestyle for seventh place, then placed 13th in the 100 butterfly with a 53.09 time. Warsaw’s Chad Twombly was two places ahead of the Warrior. Anderson won the event — and the meet —by setting a new Indiana high school record (3:08.49). In the 500 freestyle, Warsaw’s Rory Callaghan placed 10th with a 4:44.66 time. Kenton Hoppas added a 16th place swim in the 200 individual medley with a 2:01.46 time, then finished his work with an eighth place effort (56.22) in the 100 backstroke. The Tigers’ 200-yard medley relay team of Shane Diffendarfer, Paul Deming, Hoppas and Twombly finished fourth in the consolation round with a 1:40.88 time.

Sectional ticket sales SYRACUSE — Wawasee High School Athletic Director Hal Traviolia announced Tuesday that over 500 tickets for tonight’s Triton Sectional opener with Warsaw were sold at the school. Wawasee received 778 according to the athletic director. Should Wawasee win at Triton, ticket sales for the regional are expected to follow a similar format as set sectional ticket sales. Further notice will be given at a more appropriate time. Milford pins North Webster Milford’s wrestling team lost a close match February 25, 36-33, against North Webster.
