Bennett WISDOM TEETH In prehistoric times, extra teeth - the wisdom teeth - were necessary for humans to consume their rough diets. Today, they are no longer necessary. In centuries to come, scientists believe, the evolutionary process will probably “phase out” wisdom teeth entirely because they are no longer necessary for survival. Unfortunately, we won’t be around when and if this happens, so we must deal with wisdom teeth and the problems they sometimes cause. Many people believe that wisdom teeth should be routinely extracted before maturity. Fact is, they don’t have to be removed unless their presence, is likely to lead to oral problems or, unless problems have already developed. This may include: • Decaying wisdom teeth because they were never properly brushed. • Wisdom teeth which have grown in only partially, resulting in infected gums. • Wisdom teeth which have become impacted against bone, creating pain and pressure. Checking the status of wisdom teeth is an important part of regular dental examinations. Presented As A Community Service By: George C. Smith, D.D.S. Then, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., there will be a program for parents on child sexual abuse presented by Sgt. Hall. It will be held in the Wawasee High School auditorium. The Syracuse Parent-Teacher Organization has recommended this program parents only. Children will not be permitted to attend. John Nabb, principal at Syracuse Elementary School, said a program on this subject will be scheduled by grade

Livengood favors Great Lakes primary

Indiana Democratic Party Chairman John Livengood says the presidental selection process calls attention to Indiana’s “late” role and the possibility a candidate may secure the necessary delegates for nomination before May 3. He says he’d like to see some changes to help put Indiana in the national spotlight in the future. “I’d like to see the Great Wolkins files for state representative Lifelong resident of Kosciusko County, David A. Wolkjns, 1600 Kings Highway, Winona Lake, has filed his candidacy for Republican State Representative, 18th District. He will be seeking the seat presently occupied by Thames Mauzy. A 1961 graduate of Warsaw High School, Wolkins has served 18 years on the Winona Lake Town Board. He was a teacher/coach in the Warsaw Community Schools from 1967-1977 and is presently vice president of ABC Travel, Inc., a local corporation operating travel agencies in Warsaw and ELkhart. Wolkins has served as a Republican Precinct committeeman since 1984 and is a lifelong member of the Winona Lake Free Methodist Church. He is a member of the Warsaw Optimist Club, Kosciusko YMCA, Rozella Ford Gulf, Warsaw Racquet Club and CCAC Board. He and his wife, the former Candace Endicott, have a son, Matthew. levels for the fourth grade and lower at Syracuse Elementary School in March. Syracuse Police officers Ron Moser and Robert Houser will be using anatomically correct dolls in their presentations to the children. Moser, who said he, too, was abused as a child, stresses the importance of helping children relate information on experiences of being exploited or abused. He said proper physical terms are used when talking with children so everyone is dealing with the same terminologies. The Syracuse programs are coming about largely because Moser attended a child molestation seminar in Indianapolis, where Sgt. Hall was one of the speakers. Moser said the program helps concerned adults bring important information “out of the woodwork” by helping abused children relate their experiences. Hall is an 18-year veteran of the Indianapois Police Department and is recognized for his work against child

Lakes’ states, such as Indiana, get the attention they deserve,” said Livengood, “and a regional primary (or caucus) would accomplish that. Look at all the attention that’s been focused on lowa and New Hampshire over the past few weeks. You’ll see the same thing in the south for Super Tuesday.” Livengood says he’d like to see Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin hold primaries (or caucuses) on March 15. “Presidential candidates would pay a lot more attention to Indiana with a Great Lakes primary,” said Livengood. “It would only benefit the citizens of our state — their votes in the primary would have greater clout in the years ahead.” Both D,emocrats and Republicans support the idea of moving the Indiana primary. Congressman Lee Hamilton has been a leading voice in support of moving up the Hoosier primary. Senator Dan Quayle has said moving the primary would help make Indiana more relevant to the presidential selection process. GOP Chairman Gordon Durnil says there doesntt seem to be support in his party committee for the idea. Over 50 percent me

Ward favors investment in children

Thomas W. Ward Democratic candidate for Congress in Indiana’s Third District, spoke out recently in favor of investing in children at the Heac Start site in Pilgrim Baptist Church, South Bend. He was joined by Rep. Beryl Anthony (DAK), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “At a time wher we have to make tough spending choices,” Ward said, “investing in our children must be a top priority.” Specifically, Ward expressed his support for adequate funding for child nutrition . child care, child immunization, pre-natal health care and pre-school training for at-risk children. “We taxpayers expect the government to spend our money wisely,” Ward said. “If I have the privilege to represent this district

He mentioned the success of the Head Start program, which greatly reduces the likelihood that participants will be prone to teenage pregnancy, criminal activity, or. welfare dependency. Similarly, other programs aimed at children tend to help them become healthy, responsible members of their community. Anthony, a five-term Congressman from Arkansas, observed that investing in

children was the focus of this year’s annual meeting of the Democratic Caucus at the Greenbriar, and he predicted that it will be an important issue in the campaign ahead. He is a member of the House Select Committee on Children, Youth and Families. In 1987, Anthony was chosen by Speaker Jim Wright as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Ward, an attorney from Starke County, announced in January his decision to run again for Congress in Indiana’s Third District. He was the 1986 Democratic nominee and came within 47 votes of unseating his opponent, Rep. John Hiler. The extremely narrow margin of victory, determined by the Indiana State Recount Commission, made it the closest congressional race in the nation.
