Warriors'third period buries Panthers
I By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Editor NAPPANEE — Wawasee’s boys’ basketball team is one game from playing above the level of mediocrity. The Warriors moved to the break-even point Friday evening with an impressive 70-62 Northern Lakes Conference win over NgrthWood. The win raised the Warriors’ record to 9-9 overall and handed the Panthers their first home loss of the season. North Wood stands 8-10 on the campaign. “The kids feel we’re getting better each time out,” said Wawasee’s Gary Goshert after the win. “The attitude and team togetherness are very positive.” Defense was the key to Wawasee’s tom, particularly the clamps Basil Bonner put on Northwood’s Robby Prenkert. The high-scoring Panther, averaging close to 30 points a game, managed to score 18 points but hit just 26% of hjs fielders. Time and again the Panthers looked for Prenkert when they needed a field goal. Each time Bonner was there, resembling a piece of Prenkert’s clothing. “Bonner did a fantastic job on Prenkert,” said Goshert. “Os course, we shadowed most people, but not everyone, towards Prenkert. So I guess you could say it was a team effort, spearheaded by Bonner.” The game was close from the start as neither team could put much distance between each other. After an evenly played

first period, a 15-all tie, North Wood controlled the second quarter, taking a 32-28 lead into the half. The second half, however, clearly belonged to the Warriors. 58-49 with 4:52 remaining and seemingly had the game under control when North Wood made its final run at the Warriors. A couple of Wawasee turnovers aided the North Wood comeback, which reached its climax with 2:46 remaining on the clock. The Panthers roared within one point, 58-57, when Jon Rohr sank a layup at the 2:46 mark. But Wawasee closed the door on the Panthers as it sealed the win from the foul line. The Warriors sank 17-of-23 freebies in the closing quarter to leave town with their fourth straight win and sixth win in their last seven games. “Wawasee did a nice job with free throws down the stretch,” admitted North Wood’s Phil Lechlitner. “They are playing - good ball and hey, give Gary (Goshert) credit. He puts the right kids in at the right time.” Bonner was a force for.. Wawasee, scoring 16 points, grabbing five rebounds and slowing down Prenkert. In a rarity,
Bellmont wins semistate; Wawasee four eliminated
GOSHEN — Wawasee’s wrestling season came to a crashing halt Saturday as its four wrestlers failed to win at the Goshen Semistate. Meanwhile, Bellmont moved towards its second consecutive state championship by winning the semistate, 126-82, over Northern Lakes Conference champion Warsaw. In taking the runner-up position, Warsaw will advance four wrestlers to this weekend’s state championship round. Wawasee has no wrestler advancing to Indianapolis for the first time in several years. Muncie South placed third with 81.5 points, while Huntington North was fourth at 47 and Muncie North was fifth with a 39 point total. At the start of the day, Wawasee looked to be in good position at sending two wrestlers to state. Garrett Ponciroli and Josh Lantz needed opening wins to advance the the championship level. The victories never came. In fact, the Warriors didn’t win a match in the tournament. Rick Weaver, wrestling at 103, dropped the first match of the day, setting the tone to a disastrous day for Wawasee. Advancing for Warsaw will be Bobby Taylor at 103 pounds, Aaron Bruce at 145, and Nate Conley at 160. All came out of the semistate round unbeaten and champions.
