Service is key at the Wawasee Service Center

There is a good reason to have the word “service” as part of the name at this busy business operation across SR 13 from Wawasee Bowl. Service is what has brought customers back again and again since Gil Combs and Ray Yoder, brothers-in-law, bought the center in July 1982. After these energetic partners bought the center they put in the convenience store and then in November, 1986 added their car wash. They recently added a new premium unleaded gasoline pump and now have three pump islands, two self-serve and one full service. Also available are LP gas, KI Kerosene and diesel fuel. Combs said Wawasee Service Center has continued to be competitive not only on price but also on quality of service. He is

Tra-Ann inspects houses before home buyers make purchase

Home buying will become easier for customers of one of Syracuse’s newest businesses, Tra-Ann. The business, which inspects houses prior to a purchase, is housed inside of Century 21/Beaty Realty just off SR 13, south of Syracuse. The new business should give prospective home buyers a greater peace when looking for a home. In fact, John Beaty’s new business could eliminate any sleepless nights a prospective home buyer might have prior to the purchase. What Tra-Ann is all about is inspecting every phase of a house to insure safety and the full value of a house. Beaty, the owner, does all the work himself. Generally, owners are never seen, often hiding behind middle men. Not Beaty. He wants his clients to know he is working for them. Beaty inspects the grounds surrounding the house, inspects the roof and attic space and the garage. Other areas that are inspected include the foundation, plumbing, electrical outlets, wires and connections, the heating and cooling system, all major appliances and the interior and exterior. Also, a comprehensive septic tank inspection is made and a report is typed. The septic tanV is pumped during the test. The well

Changes, updates in Wawasee Schools

The changes and updates in the curriculum in the Wawasee School Corporation during the last year or so, are nearly endless; and are positive signs that the school is getting even better. “We’re in the midst of implementing new state programs resulting from the governor’s A4- program,” said school corporation superintendent Dr. Roger Thornton,“which is causing us to look at all of our educational services. We’re pleased with our program here, but realize that there’s room to improve in almost every area, and are now following through with many of these.” Continuing he said, “The major challenge we always see before us, is to make certain that what is done, is done in the best interest of the student. During the past year the corporation has made curriculum improvements in the elementary schools, middle schools, and the high school. The improvements include changes in subjects, added programs, new equipment, retraining instructors, and just working on the total picture. One of the major changes is being made in the vocational area courses being offered. For instance, the corporation no longer offers home economics to students, but rather, home arts. Home arts is a combination of cooking and sewing with instructions in single living, interior decorating, microwave cooking, and a number of others areas. Extreme revisions have also been made in the science, math, social studies, and agriculture classes. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Howard Hull explained the vocational area changes, saying, “It is our desire to keep abreast of business needs and technology advancements.” Other subject changes have been made in math, health, art, social studies, and

well acquainted with the Syracuse-Wawasee Lake area, having lived in Enchanted Hills for 15 years. Previously, he was employed at Kellams Food Town in Ligonier. Combs said he is sure glad the traffic light was installed at his corner. He feels his customers are much safer with this aid to traffic safety. Because customer service is so important to these partners, they have expanded hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. “We believe we should be here when our customers want to stop,” said Combs. “When we stop operating this way the word “service comes out of our name.”

water is tested for bacterial content Beaty leaves nothing to chance, he wants to make sure the house in question is safe for living. Tra-Ann is a rare business these days. Instead of working to make money, Beaty’s Tra-Ann business is geared towards customers and their needs. Tra-Ann, however, is not linked with any realty company, even though it presently is housed in the same building as Century 21. “This is a service for the customer, it should set their minds at ease when looking at a house,” saicLthe owner. “I want to assire them everything is fine.” Tra-Ann started its business in 1987 with 247 inspections. Beaty expects to inspect more houses in the present year. Plans are in the making to have radon testing available in the near future. The idea of the business came about when banks began requiring a buyer’s protection plan before issuing a home loan. Beaty noted that many larger cities have such a program. “I’m excited about the business,” said Beaty. “I think people in the area will like it once they become more acquainted with it.”

physical education. Four major program changes in the corporation during this year are also being looked at in high anticipation. Recently the corporation instigated a Partners in Education program for grades K-12, in this, various persons from the community, speak to students, explaining their business needs. Mastery reading is also new to all buildings this year, though it was piloted here several years ago. The class is a regrouping of the reading classes in grades 3,4, and 5. Students are no longer placed in high, middle or low groups per each grade, but are instead placed according to their grade reading level. In other words, a third grader could be in a fourth grade reading class, while a fifth grader could also be in the same class. The regrouping is only done for that one class and then students return to their perspective areas. Another change came in the music department when fifth graders were allowed to participate in orchestra class. Before this time, a student had to be at least a sixth grader to take part in the class. Middle school students are also being offered summer enrichment classes in computer and science. The classes were started durir g the 1987 summer months and will be running again this year. Additionally, Wawasee High School has seen program changes in the forms of a new substance abuse program, and a special ed job coach program. Hull said, these were incorporated into the school curriculum “To prepare the students for dealing with the real world and all the problems associated with it. ” He concluded, “We’re attempting to help every student achieve his or her maximum potential and become a productive member of society.”
