Wawasee Boat Company is a complete boat company
The Wawasee Boat Company, now in its 59th year, is the most complete boat dealer in Northern Indiana. Now in its 11th year under owner Doug Anderson, the company has grown dramatically since he purchased it in 1977. With the growth of sales and expansion of facilities that Anderson has overseen, the company has diversified so that it can now meet any boat enthusiast’s needs — power and/or sail. The Wawasee Boat Company, which was formed in 1929 by Ken Harkless, now consists of three separate locations. The largest of the three is the flagship store, which is located at the original site on the north shore of Lake Wawasee. It is the major powerboat salescenter for the company, with Dick Roehm serving as salesmanager. A large showroom is full of the high quality powerboats that you would expect, such as Century, Rinker and Formula Powerboats; J.C. Pontoons; American Skier Ski boats; Sunchaser Deckboats; and Yamaha Waverunners. The location also houses a major storage facility, an accessory department, and contains the largest service center on Lake Wawasee. The service center is a full line operation, over 4,000 square feet of shop space, which makes it the largest indoor shop in Indiana. A full-time staff maintains powerboats, fiberglass sailboats, and repair and restoration of wood boats; Brian Glaser is the service manager for the firm, and Anderson believes Glaser has turned the department, “...into the finest service department in the area. Our staff is extremely competent and caring in their service efforts.” Brian is aided by Tim Conley, Steve Taft and Chris Carey. Darrell Clark also helps with boat handling. Eight years ago Anderson added the Southeast Bay Marina to the Wawasee Boat Company. The second marina, like its name suggests, is located at the southeast bay of Lake Wawasee. The finest in hair care ® offered at The Hair Force
Many new customers have become regular passengers after taking their first trip to the Hair Force at 105 Pickwick Place 4 in Syracuse, regularly landing themselves at the beauty salon for the finest in hair care. “We love doing hair and love people —a combination that has proved very successful,” says Kathy Yoder, owner of the five-year-old business. Yoder, Beth Carey, Angie Honeycutt, and Stephanie Eisfelder provide several years of experience as (0™
are sold through salesman Bob Ruth. Pier rental and an accessory store are also available. The third Wawasee Boat location is in Syracuse on SR 13S, and is called That Sailboat Place. This store was purchased two years ago from Larry Baumgardt. On Baumgardt, Anderson says, “Larry has been in sales for 15 years. He handles all of our sailboat sales, and is probably the most knowledgeable sailboat salesman in Northeastern Indiana.” Sailboat lines that are available at That Sailboat Place and the Southeast Bay Marina are Hobie Cat, Catalina, MacGregor, and Sunfish Sailboats, along with Alpha and Mutral Sailbaords. Also available are accessories, and the only summer sport boat apparel store in the area. Anderson wants the Wawasee Boat Company to be a place where families can enjoy their visit. He added that he often spends time showing people around the marina. • The Wawasee Boat Company, the Southeast Bay Marina, and That Sailboat Place, have grown to where many people are needed to manage the facilities. In addition to the already mentioned personel, Anderson’s wife, Carolyn, works in the main office as the company’s accountant, aided by Cindy Clark. Larry Baumgardt’s wife, Clare, helps select and organize the clothing department. Andy Wysong is an assistant salesperson, who just joined the firm last year. Anderson said despite the tremendous internal expansion that his company has experienced over the past five years, he has always stressed professionalism. His dedication to customer service has paid off; the Wawasee Boat Company has set new sales records for five years in a row. As a result, a national magazine - Boat arid Motor Dealer - named the company as one of the top 10 boat dealers in the nation for
stylists, while bookkeeper Kristi Bartow and receptionists Paula Smith and Barb Trobaugh round out the successful team. Providing any type of styling in a comfortable environment, the Hair Force crew utilizes Paul Mitchell and Redken professional salon products. The salon caters to both men and women. Keeping up with the newest in styles, the Hair Force also features a Vectorilite treatment, which combines a permanent and highlighting at the same time. “We determine if the hair is healthy enough for it first. If not, we’re ready to give an alternative style that will prove attractive to the client,” Yoder notes. In keeping with the business’ relaxed attitude, stylists also don flight suits each Tuesday. “It’s our way of entertaining our clients,” Yoder laughs, adding, “We believe in giving professional service, but we like to have a lot of fun too.” That attitude has proved successfill, as the salon counts several “regular” customers among its clientele. The Hair Force offers appointments from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m Monday and Friday ; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. A new Wolf System tanning bed service is also available, accounting for several good landings at the Hair Force.

He added, “We don’t want to lose the friendly family atmosphere that we have had. We want to see change, but we don’t want to seethe flavor of the lake change.
