DAGCO repairs boats propellers, automobiles

Keeping boats in motion for 12 years, DAGCO is fast becoming a staple in the lakes community for quality service. Owned and operated by Duane and Jeanne Gafcliner since 1974, the company has been located on CR 300E, two and onehalf miles west of SR 13, for the past three years. They offer new boat propellers and repair the old. Dubbed “the doctor of propology,” Duane Gardiner has become popular throughout northern Indiana for his experience in repairing propellers. “He’s the only propeller repairman in the county — the other nearest one is in Muncie,” claims Jeanne, noting that several lake residents have regularly relied on her husband for prop repairs. Automotive radiators and air conditioner repair, as well as general welding and scuba air, help comprise the DAGCO repertoire. “Duane is a General Motors specialist, but he’s able to work on most anything,” Jeanne admits.

Three generations of Browns have worked at Phend and Brown

Three generations of Browns have been involved in the growth of Phend & Brown, Inc., from a small partnership into the progressive business it is today . The company had its beginning in Milford in 1922 when a partnership was formed by Harry Phend, Ronald Brown and Roy Treesh for the purpose of building gravel roads in northern Indiana counties. At that time roads were built using horse-drawn “slip scoops,” and a man and a team of horses could be hired for $5 for a 10-hour day After 1924, the company continued to grow as a partnership between Harry Phend and Ronald Brown. The company expanded into state highway work in 1930 when it was awarded a contract for 10 miles of road 31 from Lapaz to South Bend. A number of state and county projects were built by the firm during the ’3os and ’4os including several bridges. During this time, the firm was joined by the two partners’ sons, Parker Phend and Robert Brown. Asphalt work was added to the company’s line in 1952 with the purchase of one of the first portable “continuous mix” asphalt plants to be put to work in Indiana. With this new equipment the company was able to win a number of asphalt road contracts within the state from Indianapolis north. At the same time, the company’s fleet of earthmovers and bulldozers were kept busy grading on road and airport projects in the same general area. With the death of Parker Phend in 1985, the company became completely owned by the Brown family. Robert Brown, second

The insurance office is closed on Saturday ; however, the tax office is open on Saturday mornings during the tax season. Don Arnold and Brian Tucker serve as insurance agents for the Milford Insurance Center. Arnold has worked since 1985 with the organization, while Tucker will complete his first year this summer.

generation owner and company president, is joined in the business by three sons, Dan, Doug and Andy. With the help of a number of skilled and experienced longtime employees, the growth of the company is continuing steadily into the third generation of owners. Present-day operations of the company include asphalt paving, earthwork, underground utilities, and gravel mining. The company performs work for federal, state and local government agencies as well as industrial, commercial and private contracts. In addition to highway work, Phend & Brown builds subdivision roads, industrial sties, parking lots, driveways and tennis courts. Phend & Brown has an asphalt plant at Leesburg and one at Disko, which is five miles east of Akron on SR 114. These two plants enable the coiApany to serve Kosciusko County as well as portions of Elkhart, Marshall, Noble, Whitley, Fulton, Wabash and Miami counties with quality asphalt products and construction. The company’s sand and gravel pit is also located at Leesburg, and furnishes quality aggregate materials for area construction projects. Robert Brown notes, “We build from scratch — clearing, grading, piping, base laying, paving and finishing. Throughout the process we draw on the skill and experience of our engineers, crews and supervisors. But what really counts is the ‘extra mile’ we go for our customers, resulting in outstanding service, support and reliability.”
