Bob Pilchej, owner, stated he hopes the store will be, some day, the most specialized shoe store there is. Pilcher’s Shoes have approximately 50,000 pairs of shoes to select from at the main store in Wawasee Village, and over 15,000 pairs of quality closed-out shoes at the close-out store at 106 South Huntington Street. The business carries shoe sizes to fit anyone’s feet and if they don’t have what your looking for, they’ll do their best to find it.

Pilcher’s Shoes in Syracuse continues to grow and change. Bob Pilcher, owner, stated he hopes the store will someday be the most specialized shoe store there is. In 1986 the store moved from uptown to a larger location in Wawasee Village. There are approximately 50,000 pairs of shoes available at the new location. The budget store then moved from Main Street to the store’s uptown location. Changes are planned within the business. Most of the changes will be made at the budget store. Bob commented that they plan on changing that store’s name to “Pilcher’s Quality Close-Outs.” “The prices will be very reasonable on excellent quality footwear; so if you find a shoe you like, don’t expect to see it next visit,” explained Bob. “We expect to see a constant turn over on shoes in stock.” He further explained these close-out shoes are primarily American made products. The ownership realizes how important it is to have brand name shoes that people recognize and that the business stands behind. “People will get the best quality shoes available, and we cap offer buy one and get one free,” noted Bob. All shoes will continue to be displayed for shoppers to browse at leisure. The selection of approximately 15,000 pairs will remain different than those found at the main store, yet there will still be the large variety of sizes and widths, including those hard to find sizes. Pilcher’s Quality Close-Outs will be the place to get a couple pairs of shoes and not have a lot of money invested. Other Changes Customers may notice some changes at the main store in the future as well. Bob said they are attempting to display every shoe they have, in every size and width. There are currently an estimated 100-200 pairs of shoes in stock in each specific size and width.

A typical question asked by people coming into the store is if Pilcher’s is a rack store. Bob commented that Pilcher’s is a service shoe store, where customers can come in, sit down and be t waited on. “A lot of customers, however, like to look around. We’ll show them where their sizes are,” he commented, “and the staff is there to help when they are ready to be fit.” Pilcher’s prices are not put on the shoes. The store deals primarily in quality American made shoes that range in price. “We want you to try them on and judge the way they feel, not just shop by price. Once style and fit are established, the staff can help locate a pair that fits the buyer’s budget. If we can’t satisfy them here, we’ll suggest the close-out store where they are still getting quality, but at a lesser price.” For those hard to find sizes, Pilcher’s tries to have in stock a representation of about i any kind of footwear that would be wanted at any time. “Either we have it, or we’ll try to get it. There’s no reason to go anywhere else. We offer the chance to try difficult sizes on the day you come in, rather than mail order,” noted Bob. He also stated the store will special order shoes. “If we don’t have it, we’ll make every attempt to find one.” Customers at Pilcher’s come from all over the world. Bob commented that the store mails shoes to some customers, after they have at one time been in the store and have been properly fit. Sizes range from 2-14 in women’s shoes with widths ranging from AAAAAA to EEEEE. Men’s sizes range from with widths ranging from AAAAA to EEEEEE. Children’s sizes are found in widths A through EEEE. Pilcher’s history dates back to 1947, and the quick courteous service that has helped it grow the past 41 years, will continue. Both locations are open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
