State Bank of Syracuse is a community bank
S.L. Ketering formed the Bank of Syracuse in 1899 with assets of SIO,OOO. The bank was located in the rear of the feed store at what is now Pickwick Block in downtown Syracuse. Nearly 90 years later that bank thrives as the State Bank of Syracuse, one of the oldest banks in the county, located on the corner of Main Street and SR 13, with assets of $61,254,087 and $56,374,804 in deposits. Enjoying its best year ever, James E. Caskey, president, cited a 23 percent increase of assets and deposits in 1987. “We continue to enjoy our relationship with AmeriTrust Indiana and will continue to serve our customers, expand our markets, and at the same time, continue to retain our identity as a community bank.” With two other Syracuse branches, and one in Columbia City and Warsaw, the AmeriTrust company claims 52 employees, while that force will be increased when a full-service branch opens in Augsburger’s Super Valu in North Webster next November. Blessed with a workforce composed of men and women who are actively involved in community happenings, the State Bank of Syracuse succeeds in fulfilling its philosophy of community service. Leading the group is its president, 6 Jim Caskey, who has served on the local Chamber of Commerce board of directors for 10 years. Caskey is also a member and past chairman of the Wawasee Flotilla Committee, past president of the Rotary Club, and serves the United Way and Lung Association as a local fundraiser. Mike Mangas, vice president, served three years on the board of Lakeland Youth Center; was chairman for two years of the Wawasee High School Principal’s Advisory Committee; served on his church administrative board; has been a United Way fundraiser, and is currently on the planning team to implement a local Junior Achievement program. Susie Johnson, customer service officer, has served on the board of the South Bend Chapter AIB for 11 years and is a pastpresident. She is currently serving as the
Customers are top priority at Leisure Pools and Spas
Generally businesses are still regarded infants until they’ve been around for 10 years or more, but at four-years-old, Leisure Pools and Spas is fast becoming a giant in the Syracuse area. While an award for outstanding pool sales marked the company two years ago, an award for design excellent found its way to the Main Street store last year. Weatherking, the largest pool company in the state, presented the popular store with its “Pool of the Year” award, one of only nine stores in the nation to receive such a distinction. Nevertheless, the Syracuse business takes more pride in its commitment to its customers. “We like to allow our customers to come in and browse around — they are our top priority,” says Donna Conder, who operates the store with her husband, Jim. A member of the National Swimming Pool Institute (NSPI), Leisure Pools and Spas has seen tremendous growth in the past year, adding a new showroom and remodeling for 1988. Located at 111 E. Main St., the company offers complete sales, service, installation of its pools and spas year-round. Both in-ground and above-ground style pools are offered, with any size or shape available should a buyer choose to have his swimming pool custom designed. As with any pool the company sells, including pool kits, Jim Conder is at the site to ensure proper installation. Conder also handles servicing needs, whether it be a mechanical problem with the pump or a cosmetic repair to the pool liner. Some people choose Leisure Pools and Spas for its regular maintenance service. The business will open the pool at the start of the season and close it for the winter months. If a customer chooses, the company even offers a maintenance schedule for the summer. ’ Leisure Pools often suggests that pool owners avoid the daily hassle of adding chemicals to the pool by installing an automatic chlorinator, which releases chlorine, as required, into the pool. The business carries this, as well as many
chapter’s state representative, and is a fiveyear member of NABW, a three-year member of the Syracuse School Advisory Committee and serves on the Kosciusko County Partners in Education Advisory Committee. Johnson has also worked locally as a United Way and Lung Association fundraiser. Assistant vice president and manager of the Village branch in Syracuse, Milly Ginger is a member of NABW and a lifetime member of Hex Grange, serving as it’s secretary, as well as secretary of the State Grange. Bob Owen, vice president, serves as treasurer of the board for the Wawasee Building Trades. He is also a United Way fundraiser. Marketing officer Jeanne Gardiner, meanwhile, serves as president of the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce and has been a director for eight years. She is president of the newly-created Kosciusko County Convention and Visitors Bureau; served on the executive board of the 1987 Syracuse Sesquicentennial committee; is chairman of the County Rural Numbering implementation committee; serves on the Kosciusko County Partners in Education board; is a member of the board of directors, currently its secretary, of the Indiana chapter, Bank Marketing Association and chaired its annual MAXI Advertising Awards program in 1987. In eight years of advertising awards competition, Gardiner has been instrumental in earning SBS seven first place and five second place awards. She is a past president of the chamber’s Retail Merchant Division, having served two consecutive terms, and is currently its treasurer. Gardiner has coordinated the local winter carnival since its reinstitution nine years ago. She is a member and past president of the Enchanted Hills Playhouse Theater Guild, and served as chairman of the Wawasee High School Office Lab Advisory Board during its program and equipment evaluation and subsequent successful fund drive to add word processing equipment.
other pool supplies, including: slides, diving boards, heaters, solar blankets, Pool Vacs, chemicals, sun domes, decorative fountains, a Large variety of unusual inflatable toys, floats, bathing suits, patio furniture, and even silk plants. Currently, a close-out on 1987 furniture is being held to make way for 1988 models. Leisure Pools and Spas, as many would expect from its name, also carries numerous name-brand portable and inground spas (or hot tubs), including Continental. _ Spas come in a wide variety of shapes, including round and octagon. Most are made of acrylic and are easy to care for, according to Donna Conder. An increasingly popular model is the swim spa, which is largely used for exercise purposes, utilizing pressure jets to swim against. Special orders also are readily available, should the customer desire a product not found in the vast showroom. Currently, the store is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and until noon on Saturday. Expanded hours will be offered during the summer season.
