FUNJET AT PATONA BAY — George Paton sits in one of Patona Bay’s Funjet’s in the company’s showroom. Patona Bay, on Lake Tippecanoe, offers a variety of boats and accessories for sale. Patona Bay meets the needs of area boaters

Patona Bay, conveniently located on the west shore of Lake Tippecanoe, continues to meet the needs of area boaters. The local marina began in 1928 as a campground, and has blossomed into one of the largest and most efficient marinas in northern Indiana. It was George Paton I who started the legacy of Patona Bay in 1904. He sold canoes, sailboats, fishing boats and Evinrude outboard motors prior to moving to Patona Bay’s present location. In 1945, George Paton II helped intensify the boating industry in the area by building the first boathouse. The project-symbolized the future for Patona Bay — growth. Now, three generations later, George Paton 111, handles the daily operations of the Lake Tippecanoe marina. The accounting and paperwork is performed by Bob Paton — George’s brother — While George works with customers and other projects. In the last couple of years Patona Bay has undertaken the a project to include a “museum” of old pictures from the beginning of Patona Bay. A complete section is devoted to the historical information inside the showroom. / “People seem to really enjoy looking at the pictures and seeing the past again,” said Paton. “This is just another service for our think they really enjoy looking and remembering. ’ ’ Paton’s second project deals with Patona

Bay’s private, yet free beach and picnic facility. It is the only beach area and picnic facility around Lake Tippecanoe. In fact, it could be the only beach/picnic facility linked tea marina in northern Indiana. “Not many marinas have this opportunity,” added Paton. “We offer the service to our customers.” As Paton increases some fringe areas of the business, the hardware of the store also increases. Accessories — skis, jackets, flotations, etc. — storage space and service have blossomed lately. Patona Bay’s storage facility increased when Paton went to a shrink-wrap-type covering. The new style of covering allowed more boats to be stored outside without any damage. Service has always been a main thrust at Patona Bay; now it’s more intensified. Taking care of boats and their customers is what makes Patona Bay successful. The local marina, although one of the largest in the area, has not forgotten how it developed. Taking care of business — the customer — is Patona Bay’s trademark. Eight full-time employees during winter months allows Patona Bay to remain afloat. Summer staffing doubles in size. When thinking of a marina that is interested in safety, people and recreation, Patona Bay is the answer.

business area,” added Speicner. “The building world is changing, these are important areas to learn.” Previously, students learned how to build, whether in woods, metals or small engines. Students will continue to build projects, but will be taught a more complete process of construction. Furthermore, students will work together in building a business, producing a product and marketing the item. Construction of the item will be selected by students, with assistance from the industrial technology department.
