Vidphone: A unique communications product

The Vidphone is a unique communications product which uses industry standard equipment and local/long distance carriers to produce clear black and white images on a screen viewed by the users. Almost full motion for teleconferencing and surveillance applications has been achieved along with remote activation of video transmission. Here's Hew It Works:

The Vidphone™, which includes a 500 line resolution camera, translates the camera picture into thousands of electronic bits of information, then compresses the signal so it can be transmitted over telephone lines. A Vidphone™ on the other end reassembles the information into a series of black and white pictures that are updated at one picture per second. The capability of present telephone lines will not allow you to send pictures and voice together on the same phone line. An important feature of the Vidphone™ is it will operate with a single phone line, alternating between picture and voice by your control. However, for full operation you will need two telephone lines — one for picture and one for voice. The added feature of full operation more than compensates for the added cost of another phone line.
