Late run lifts Grace

| By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Editor MISHAWAKA — Oh what a college basketball game. Grace College, trailing 68-59 with seven minutes remaining, ran off 13 unanswered points Tuesday to edge Bethel, 79-76, in a thrilling Mid-Central Conference basketball game in Mishawaka. The Lancer win raised their record to 22-3 overall and 7-0 in the conference. Bethel fell to 17-8 overall and 4-3 in the MCC. Grace can clinch its seventh straight MCC championship Saturday evening when it visits Marian. For most of the second half it looked like the Lancers were headed for their first, conference setback. Bethel, with a 41-38 halftime advantage, took a 47-40 lead with 16 minutes remaining and 68-59 seven minutes before the final buzzer. But Grace’s defense turned the tide in the waning momenta. Two key defensive plays in the

finished 10 points behind the winners at 71.5. Rounding out the top five include Fort Wayne Northrop, 62; Fort Wayne Dwenger, 59.5; and Homestead, 48. Two Warriors completed the tournament without a loss — Josh Lantz and Garrett Ponciroli.

Lancers’ 13-0 spurt were charging infractions against the Pilots. Ben Teske drew the first whistle on Jody Martinez, then Paul Zeltwanger gained the latter on Bob Knebel. In the meantime Tylor Coley, Teske and Zeltwanger brought the Lancers back with key shooting. Coley opened the run with a soft eight-footer, then evened the score, 68-68, with a thunderous slam dunk. “Tylor (Coley) can electrify a basketball game,” commented Grace’s Jim Kessler following the emotional win. “He’s a make or break type of player.”/ Teske then gave Grace its first lead since the opening half with a nice 15-foot jumper with 2:58 remaining. Grace added another field goal to move ahead 72-68 before Bethel called time-out with 2:00 on the clock. “Defensively, we made some things happen in the second half which helped us get back into the game,” added Kessler, noting the two charging fouls whistled on the Pilots. “Bethel played real

Lantz moved his record to 32-4 by whipping Fort Wayne Northrop’s Dennis Springs, 10-6, in the championship. The Lantz win was his first in two years against Springs, who defeated the Warrior in the Wawasee Invitational championship. Ponciroli followed suit with a hard-fought, 7-4, victory over Fort Wayne Wayne’s Steve Gouse at 189. The championship victory moved Ponciroli’s record to 29-6 and one victory away from the state championship round. Both regional winners need an opening round victory Saturday at Goshen to qualify for the state championships. Meanwhile, two other Warriors advanced into this weekend’s semistate. Rick Weaver placed . second at 103 pounds, losing only to Fort Wayne Dwenger’s Andy Noll. Weaver was in position to be the first Warrior champion, but the Fort Wayne wrestler controlled the match, winning 5-2. Weaver’s record stands at 22-10 entering semistate action. The final Warrior advancing to semistate is Tom Mangas. The junior placed third by shutting out Concordia’s Tom Detmer 4-0. Mangas advances to Goshen with a 19-16 record. Shawn Jones concluded his wrestling for the season by placing fourth in the tournament. Jones, 27-7, dropped a tough decision to Fort Wayne Northrop’s Shane Yoder in the consolation rouncl, Semistate action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with the championship round slated for late afternoon.

well, they were prepared for us.” Knebel, who finished with 21 points, sank a three-pointer with 1:49 left, bringing Bethel within one, 72-71, but Zeltwanger answered with a three-point shot and Grace, seemingly, was in command. Grace’s free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the triumph, although the Pilots had one final opportunity. With 13 seconds remaining, Bethel took possession of the basketball after Rob Irwin was called for travelling. But a desperation shot from three-point territory fell hopelessly short ending the game. Coley, a former Concord standout, led the Lancers with 30 points, while Zeltwanger added 17. Brooks Koble chipped in 11 markers for Grace and Teske finished with‘lo. Knebel, a 5-7 freshman, led the Pilots with 21 points, while Larry Fielstra added 19. Rick McGillicuddy finished with 12 points for Bethel.

Neal Frantz named Wawasee baseball coach

SYRACUSE — Neal Frantz has been named Wawasee High School boys’ head baseball coach according to Ned Speicher, principal at the Syracuse school. Frantz replaces Scott Siler who is an assistant baseball coach at Goshen. The announcement was made last week and takes effect immediately. Frantz, a 1983 Grace College graduate and former star at Whitko High School, has worked in the Wawasee School system for three years. He teaches general mathematics at Wawasee. The new coach and his wife, Connie, are expecting their first child in September. They reside in Wawasee Heights, Syracuse. “I am really looking forward to the position, although I am a little apprehensive about going into a new situation,” said Frantz about his new position. “But I’ve been here long enough, I know the kids and hopefully things will work out.” With the appointment, Frantz is looking to turn Wawasee’s baseball program around. The Warriors, according to Frantz, have not had a winning season fti several years. “I’m not saying I’ll change that,” said Frantz, referring to Wawasee’s won-lost record, “but the attitude. I want the team to have a winning attitude and a good work ethic.” Also, Frantz wants his team to present a good image to the local community and opposing teams. Because of this direction, Frantz will be a disciplinarian. Keying success in
