greater than in 1986 and exceeded the previous high sales record established in 1985 by almost four hundred million dollars. Net income for 1987 was $144.4 million or 68 percent above the 1986 profits of sßs.9million. Earnings per share for 1987 were $3.30 compared to $1.68 for 1986 which represents a 96 percent increase for this year over last year. Aftertax earnings for 1986 were reduced by $42.7 million or 84 cents per share because of write-offs that occurred primarily in the third and fourth quarters, which were partially offset by a one-time gain of $9.4 million from the company’s leasing operations due to revisions in Federal tax law. Fourth quarter 1987 sales were a record $1,076 billion. Net income for the quarter was s2l million, or 54 cents per share. Earnings for the fourth quarter reflected the company’s adoption bf Financial Accounting Standards Board Opinion 96 which deals with deferred income taxes. The adoption of FASB 96 also caused a restatement of the results of the first three quarters of 1987. Earnings after tax through Sept. 30, 1987, which were previously reported as $111.6 million, or $2.50 per share, were restated as $123.4 million, or $2.76 per share. Comparative sales and profits for the fourth quarter of 1986 were $866 million and SIOO,OOO respectively, and earnings per share were four cents. The company made other yearefitf adjustments that, together with the adjustments made to comply with FASB 96, reduced 1987 earnings by $6.6 million or 14 cents per share. Those adjustments included after-tax restructuring charges of slß.l
million which included plant closings, plant downsizings, and relocation of manufacturing assets. The company also took a $17.9 million after-tax charge for writing down to market value certain property owned by-a subsidiary, Summey Building Systems. The company reported one-time gains of slO.l million after-tax as a result of the changes in accounting for income taxes and $19.3 million after-tax from the sale of a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dana Commercial Credit Corporation, Dana’s leasing operation. Earnings per share for 1987 reflect the results of Dana’s stock repurchase program. That program reduced the number of outstanding shares at year-end 1987 to 40,648,433. Shares outstanding on Dec. 31, 1986 were 44,617,297; down from approximately 56.5 million shares before the repurchase program began in November, 1985. Gerald B. Mitchell, Chairman and CEO, said, “One year ago we stated that 1986 was a transitional year for Dana Corporation, a year that would put us in a string competitive position in our various markets in 1987 and beyond. Our performance for 1987 bears out those forecasts. Our record $4.1 billion in sales for this past year and our 68 percent increase in net income reflect our strong performance in all our domestic and international markets. Performance in each of our markets exceeded that of the previous year. The key to our sales growth,” Mitchell continued, “was market penetration. We exceeded the industry growth trend in all our markets. “Sales of original equipment components to our highway vehicle market exceeded two billion dollars in 1987 for the first time in our history,” said Mitchell. “Just ten years ago, our total sales were approximately what we sold last year to this one market. Within our highway vehicle market, sales of Dana parts in 1987 to manufacturers of light trucks were up 13.6 percent while the market for light trucks advanced 1.4 percent. The medium truck market grew by 3.8 percent in 1987, and our growth in that market for the same period was 4.2 percent. The heavy truck market had the strongest growth with an increase in retail sales of Interested In A FULL TIME CAREER : In Real Estate? 16.3 percent; while sales of Dana components into that market during 1987 increased 27 percent. We clearly out-performed aH sectors of the highway vehicle market. “It is particularly gratifying that our growth continued in our other markets as well. Worldwide consolidated sales of Dana replacement parts into the automotive distribution market increased 13 percent over 1986; and sales to the truck parts distribution market increased 4.3 percent. Dana’s 1987 sales in the mobile off-highway market and the industrial equipment market increased 6 percent and 10 percent, respectively. Again, in each case, Dana performed better than the market. “Dana’s international operations reported sales for 1987 that were 15 percent higher than in 1986. This reflects the improvements in the international markets in all of our global regions and the effects of the international reorganization we started in 1981, coupled with the weaker U.S. dollar. “We continue to refine our financial services operations and, as a result, those operations are contributing more to the success of the company. We will see further refinements during 1988 when we conclude the sale of several Diamond Savings and Loan branch offices and of our Summey manufactured housing operation,” concluded Mitchell. Southwood J. Morcott, President and Chief Operating Officer, said, “During 1988 we will continue our restructuring programs which focus on opening small, flexible manufacturing plants and regional assembly centers. Nine such facilities were either opened or announced during this past year, and we have plans for additional facilities during 1988 and beyond. These regional facilities are located close to our customers and react quickly to market changes and customer requirements. They have played an important role in our improved 1987 results.” Leesburg alumni banquet May 21 The 1988 Leesburg High School alumni banquet will be held May 21 at the Shrine Building located at the Fairgrounds in Warsaw. The classes of 1938 and 1963 will be honored. Officers of the alumni association are Sandra Allen, president; “Mac” Silveus, vice president and Sue Charlton, secretary.
